My ffrr tried to give me a heart attack..... Smoke from A/C

Hi all , just got home having covered about 20 miles in the Hang Over, about 10 miles into my journey the car started to fill up with smoke, it scared the living Censored out of me Shocked . I was quite happily going home doing about 55, listening to some Hendrix, fag on the go, with the window open about an inch (raining). As it was raining I'd selected the "Prog Defrost" mode, and the little thumb wheel on the middle vent was on 3 dots to the blue. I over took a slower car and suddenly noticed smoke drifting across me to-wards the window, alot more smoke than me just smoking, it was as if I had a passenger smoking a King Edward in the nearside rear seat. PANIC!!!!!!!!!!, trying not to crash, I started looking for the source of the smoke, turning off every thing that was on. A few moments after I turned off the Air Con it stopped, I still hunted for a hot item in the car and could find nothing. I then felt the centre air vents in the car, they were very cold and a bit wet. I have now come to the conclusion that it was not smoke in the car, and that the Air Con had started to form clouds in the car. And due to the fact that my window was open slightly, they exited the car across my line of sight, or should that be line of fright?
I would like to say that I've never experienced this before, but that would be a lie. It has happened to me once before in my Classic Hang Over, which was fitted with Middle East spec Air Con. If that was left on fill tilt for ten minutes it would start to form clouds in the car, and turn it into a freezer!!
Has any of you experienced this??

Not in the full fat but had a similar experience on the motorway in Thailand last year. Smoke through the air vents and scared the s.... Out of me. Wasn't sure if air con just froze over of quite what happened. Anyway turned it off and then turned back on 10 minutes later as all was well.

Bloody air con is often the source of a few near heart attacks. The pool of water under the car when air con has been on has caught me out on more than one occasion, think my car and dumped all its oil.

Has happened to me in my 04 TD6 quite a few years ago now! God i forgot just how frightening an experience that was! Reminded me of when a classic Mini i owned in my teenage years went up in smoke due to some badly fitted audio!!!

Very common in ac systems when the outside air has a relatively high dew point temperature ie moderately high temperature combined with high moisture content. When the ac evaporator temperature is very low, about 3-4C, the fins become overwhelmed with condensation and become covered in water, moisture condensed from the air then tends not to collect on the evaporator plates and drain away but instead forms a mist or fog which gets carried in the airflow into the car / room.
Nothing to worry about, will correct itself as the air condition changes or the evaporator drys.
Can be very alarming when it happens unexpectedly.
Now you know. Thumbs Up Very Happy

Just looked at the updates, and come to think of it, it was a misty night and it was raining, bet they don't say anything about it in the handbook!
And Craig, I have also experienced an electrical short in my old Austin Seven Saloon (Mini for all of you that don't know your history!), but mine was caused by the starter button (by seat on floor) shorting out on the big bore exhaust that I'd fitted with 1308 cooper lump, that resulted in a full rewire it was a mess Sad Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Only time I got "fog" inside was on a lovely dry sunny day on a motorway trip, all family on board too, after about half an hour of travelling. we went windows down after it happened Smile .

Had another type of fog in my old BMW convertible (328 from early 80's) a few years back. The heater radiator blew up with my wife in it at a traffic light. She just jumped out and left the car standing in the middle of the road. The car was completely filled with the watervapour, like it was on fire Wink

New heater installed and a month later (top down) my feet were getting hot and wet again no smoke this time and again the bloody thing failed. Car went to the junkyard after that.

But the "exploding car" story still does its rounds in our family and group of friends Wink MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
