I had new genuine pads and discs front and rear fitted on my TD6 2006 at Beadles Sidcup as I had to have the MOT done before a long drive to Switzerland.

In Switzerland the car starts to make a klonking sound every time I brake. I take it to a garage who informs me that the brake pad retaining spring clips at the front that were also renewed have been installed incorrectly allowing the pads to float too much and hence make the klonking sound! They also inform me that the rear brake pads have been installed incorrectly. One pad on each side at the rear have an adhesive side which should be mounted on the outside not the piston side.

Needless to say I am speechless...

How a main dealer can deliver this kind of work is beyond belief. Clearly Beadles will not see me again and I will claim a full refund.

Well I did have a naive expectation they knew what they were doing and they were able to "perform" the job in time for my departure. Unfortunately my normal Independent did not.

I know better now...

What - they put the pad on the wrong way round so the metal rather than the pad was against the disc??????

No that I would have noticed. The pad retaining clips that are fitted in the caliper bracket were reverse mounted so that the pads were incorrectly situated against the disc.

Maybe I'm being naive, but do garages not have a second pair of eyes, checking over something as fundamental as brakes?

Hmmm... that could be why if I brake a little suddenly there is a sort of "Clunk" comes from what sounds like the back brakes. Better get this checked out me thinks! Will have a look in the Wiki to see if i can find details of the pad retainers etc.

Thanks we did and we are actually moving there so there will be atleast two forum members in Switzerland.

I have of course taken a photo of the faulty brake installation which I will post. Atleast then people can see how it should NOT be done.

Indeed I have no problem with an apprentice doing the job but then an experienced technician must 4-eyes check it.
