Advice required on second car

Hi Gang - I'm after a bit of advice please if I can..

I currently have a Merc CLK 320 cabriolet - It's a great car and I use it a lot but I think the time has come to change (I'm a bit bored of it)

I've seen a Porsche 911 Carrera (996) 2002 plate with low miles. Is there anything I should know about buying/owning a Porsche of this nature. It will be a second car but I do use the merc sometimes for my 65 mile commute each day.

I'm going to look at it tomorrow to see what I think but never owned a Porka before.

It's a 2002, 49,000 miles, 2 owners and described as very good all round..

Any advice would be welcome..

Thanks folks Ash

Comports, the one thing re a Porsche is WARRANTY, based on experience of a 996 and a 997 they break and cost more than a small country to repair, I know many people who have no issues and as many who do, brilliant car but WILL go wrong. Also make sure it is a comprehensive warranty - Example. My 2004 997 needed a new exhaust bracket, 'that'll be £1600 sir' from porsche dealer and not covered under warranty, in addition they would not renew warranty until this was remedied....sold the bloody thing, wouldnt want that to put you off but go in eyes wide open Thumbs Up

Thanks mate

It's not at a main dealer but a local used car lot. Quite a big one and been there for years but I guess it would a general used car warranty. If I like it I could always "up" the warranty or negotiate an uplift but not sure it would be a comprehensive one anyway (typical car lot warranty I guess)

I know it's a difficult question but is it really likely to be more expensive when it goes wrong than the RR?

Cheers Ash

Buy it.... I take it you have read up on IMS faults? Service only needed every 2 years and it now comes under the Porsche fixed price service deals. Very cheap to service now. Parts are plentiful through companies like design911 , carparts911, loads out there. The main dealers are expensive. Someone up here just quoted £1800 for discs and pads all round.. DIY price £360.
Loads of forums and a very active Porsche club. The club costs £55 a year and has so many events. The main dealers have regular events for club members and just hand you the keys to "test drive" the latest models. Do it.... Thumbs Up Previously..

If you have to think about all the things that can go wrong, are dangerous and can cost you money, you have to stay in bed, don't breath to deep and die peacefully.
Yes there is a risc in buying a Porche, you might like it
Or worse, like me, not like it at all, but then you can say you had one ( and did not like it) Rolling Eyes
Go for it Thumbs Up

As with all cars, check the service history and look through the work receipts for work carried out.
Check the radiators at the front for stone damage, the aircon rad can be damaged easily so make sure it works.
There is a button in the drivers footwell, on the right, next to the fuse panel, that if you press it will pop the spoiler up at the rear, so make sure the spoiler moves.
Have a quick read of a buyers guide tonight... And post pictures when you get it!! Previously..

Slow down - I've not seen it properly yet but will be going in the morning.

Ad suggests full service history. Last one was 3k miles ago.

Will check it all out and discuss warranty and press every button I can find.

Wish me luck.

Sneak peak of what could be in my stable soon though Smile

Ahhh, it's a cab with the expensive hard top... Nice. I would have thought a cab would be less likely to have had a hard life as its not a favourite with the boy racers! Which is good.... Previously..

Now showing my ignorance. Will it have a soft top roof as well as the hard top?
The ad says remote control electric soft top

If not, does the hard top store in the car somewhere.? (Although I can't see where it would) Ash

Hard top stays in the garage.... Hopefully it has a cover, but no big deal if it doesn't.
The soft top is always there ready to go up when the hard roof comes off. Previously..
