they are all auto box's.......some of the p38's? were manual i think.. ... - .- -.

Yes, BMW dropped the manual box idea fairly early in development. That's not to say they didn't do a bespoke build, if the money was right, but I've not heard of one.

Never seen an L322 manual, but a friend of mine had a manual P38

Funny, before I got the L322, I'd had Disco 2s and thought "has to be manual for the slippy stuff"

I reckon it would be physically doable through using bmw x5 parts for pedals and cylinders ... The area does look like it would take it.

I can't see it would be cost effective for LR to offer, esp in low volume. BMW would take the view that the manual steptronic mode would suffice. All you are missing is a clutch pedal from a driving point of view.

Sorry, yes, stupid Jesus pad with its auto correct typing - I meant steptronic. I'm sure BMW will have seen that as quite adequate as a manual substitute in that type of vehicle, so didn't offer a proper manual box option.

From my experience, the big benefit of a manual is having a locked drive line with no slippage at the torque converter like you get with an automatic, especially in the low gears. I find this most useful when towing on long up hills where you can fall back on the grunt of the engine in a set gear, as opposed to the auto down shifting and revving the nuts off the engine.

Always had autos for off roading, much better than manuals IMHO, when the going gets very tough you will find it very hard to snap a half shaft or rip out a UJ with an auto, in a manual, lift a wheel, spin it up and then come in contact with the ground and something has to give as the driveline is fixed, hence something breaks, in an auto the torque convertor allows slip and nothing breaks...
