Troublesome TPMS tale

About 3 months ago I got new tyres fitted and took the opportunity to renew the TPMS valves. I read the ws manual carefully before doing this as I didn't want to get into the situation where the dealer needed to program them to get them to work with all the associated hassle. Manual says they will self-program.

After driving a few miles or so after getting them fitted, the TPMS warning light went out, showing that they had automatically registered with the rest of the equipment. So far so good.

Next day, TPMS light flashes amber quickly and message "TPMS equipment failure" is displayed. Flashing then settles down to constant amber.

Next day, TPMS light goes out during a drive. Then couple days later, the equipment failure message comes up again. This has become a repeating scenario. I can sometimes get the light to reset by disconnecting then reconnecting the 2 plugs that feed the TPMS unit in the rear offside compartment, but it doesn't fix it every time, and even if it does the error comes up again.

Now SWMBO is doing a long solo drive in a week so I thought I'd get a full service at main dealer and also get them to check out the TPMS.

What the dealer says now is that the individual TPMS valve ID codes need to be manually programmed into the TPMS ECU, and of course these codes are on the inside of the tyre, so each wheel has to be removed, the tyre removed and the code read. AHA, I say, I photographed the valves before fitting, so no need. No good, they say, we need to know which code corresponds to which wheel. When I tell them that the manual clearly states that they are self programming they refuse to listen.

What I want to know is if anyone has had this experience and do the codes indeed need to be entered? Is it the case that sometimes this needs to be done, or is this just bs as I suspect and they'll end up charging to do all this work and then the fault will still be there? Can indy specialists fix this problem? (I know, I know, I should have gone for option C as discussed in my other service thread but I'm time limited).

Thanks. 2007 TDV8 Vogue SE Java Black

Sounds like dealer is talking b'lox!

I'm sure the system automatically recodes once it senses new sensors.

There is an issue with the spare, so if that's been replaced, you would need to fit it to the car and have the TPMS system "see" it and then swap it back into the boot.

The better alternative is to have it disabled as I can imagine your other half is like mine and would go into a blind panic if the TPMS warning came on while she was driving and could end up causing more problems trying to stop to check, what is most likely a false alarm Censored Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

The spare hasn't been touched and there is no warning about it, but I guess I could run it as a road wheel for a few miles in case there is some issue there.

Disabling is my preferred option, but need the tool to do it. You're spot on about the panic scenario Rolling Eyes 2007 TDV8 Vogue SE Java Black

07 TDV8 VSE here too and after fitting new valves drove for a bit and all driven wheels recoded themselves. Still get the spare wheel error message but that's because I am too lazy to get it sorted!

I also have an 07 TDV8 VSE and replaced the TPMS valves with £50 set (Siemens JLR ones) from eBay - they all re-coded themselves to the system in no time

I've read up quite extensively on the TMPS system and it ounds like the dealer is talking absolute Censored - I would try and take it elsewhere.... 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

Mine took a while to settle down when I had 3 changed all at once (including spare which required me to fit as a road wheel)

Dealer talking utter crap.
