There are lots of free Smartphone apps about. The downside is that you have to remember to start the app before starting your journey, also as it uses gps it will wipe your phone battery in a couple of hours so you need a charger with you. It's a total ball ache in honesty.

Or......buy yourself a fleet telematics box and a subscription and you can have business / private miles PDF reports automatically emailed to you each month, the data is a ultra accurate and you don't even need to think about it. The added benefits of this is that you can also track your vehicle on a PC / tablet which could assist you if you were ever accused of something that you didn't do (ie you could prove you were somewhere else), speeding and of course, stolen vehicle tracking - you may not want it back after a theft but you may want the stuff in the boot or glovebox (eg that Nana Mouskouri cassette that you never want to lose!)

You'll pay for the latter though, £10 to £15 + VAT per month..... 2006 4.2 SC

I use one of these

http://www.milelogik.com/

Tracks actual mileage rather than waypoints, gives a brief beep to remind when setting off. One push to log as work....
