Intriguing ticking noise

Hi All,

Hopefully the experts on here will know exactly what this is Very Happy

I've started to notice a ticking from the car. The symptoms are:

When the car is started all is quiet for a couple of seconds and then the ticking starts. The ticking continues while the car is holding its revs above 1000 rpm. After a few seconds the revs drop and then the ticking stops. Reving the engine in P is all quiet, as it is in N.

Once in D and moving off the ticking comes back Shocked

It seems to then continue but decrease in volume as the car warms up.

Any ideas gents?

Cheers

Clive

Thanks for the replies.

Well it has to be something that runs automatically for a little while with a cold engine...and then only runs when the transmission is in Drive.

The tick is commensurate with engine speed btw.

Hi All,

Had a bit more of a listen and play about.

I think it might be an exhaust leak somewhere in front of the cats. I can just about hear it in P blipping the throttle at low revs, gets quieter as it warms up, but I can induce it a bit louder by putting some load on the engine by turning the AC on.

So from a cold start is there something that puts load on the engine while it's holding the revs high during warm up?

Cheers

Have you checked for something obvious such as a screw or bolt head stuck in a tyre, at low speed you will hear it with every rotation.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies.

Downloaded an app for the old phone that measures bpm as you tap the screen....

The tick frequency is half that of the engine speed so I'm just in the process of checking the spark plugs are done up properly (once my oppo comes back with the correct sized plug socket) Very Happy

Spark plugs were a little loose but they aren't the source of the noise.

So I suspect it's an exhaust leak on the manifold somewhere. I'll have a proper look next week when we do the brakes.

Cheers

Hi All,

Just to close this.

Found the leak where the manifold joins into the single pipe.

The dealer sorted it out today and the car is again sounding as it should, and driving much better.

Cheers
