Holiday MPG

Just back from 2 weeks in Cornwall, it's a 650 mile round trip before even going anywhere so we took the FF as it hardly ever gets a good run. My current usage profile is lots of very short, local runs so my fuel consumption is really poor, whatever I am driving.

I know we don't buy these for their fuel economy but I thought you may be interested in some of the stats:

Travelling to and from Cornwall the FF was loaded floor to ceiling with kit and people
Travelling around Cornwall just people!

I reset the fuel computer before leaving home.....

- Trip to Cornwall - 325 miles, 6 hours non-stop, mixture of motorways, dual carriageways and A roads. Directed off the M5 lots of times to avoid traffic, got stuck in lots of congestion on the A30 at Bodmin - lots of idling etc. Arrived at Cornwall MPG computer showing 21.6.

- Pottered around Cornwall for 2 weeks, added c. 400 miles. Lots of short trips through the Cornish lanes. Lots of up / down, very steep gradiants, lots of idling. the night before we came home the MPG computer had dropped to 17.5MPG Rolling Eyes

- Day 13 left Cornwall at 19:30 and straight run home (just 2 stops for roadworks on the M25 Evil or Very Mad) - A30, M5, M4, M25, M1. Made it home in just under 4.5 hours, making really good progress, not "trying" for MPG particularly. MPG computer went back up to 19.0 MPG just as we pulled on to the drive.

I always take the computer MPG computer with a pinch of salt so I also did a proper, old fashioned calcalation when I filled up before the journey home:
Tank to tank Distance = 301 miles
Fuel used = 67.01L (multiply by 0.219969157 to conver to 14.74 UK gallons)
301 miles / 14.74 gallons = 20.42 MPG

OK, it's not brilliant but I don't think that 20 MPG is too bad for what it is. It just goes to show that if you can keep it rolling the fuel consumption is workable.

I've been out and about today (into town and back, a few short runs, stop / start traffic, lots of idling etc.) and it's dropped back off a cliff again Rolling Eyes 2006 4.2 SC

That's comparable to mine.

Recent holiday in Norfolk. Four of us and a full boot there and back plus lots of minor A and B roads and stop / start stuff around the coast got me just over 20mpg on average and over 21mpg on the drive there with very minimal traffic and lots of steady speed motorway and dual carriageway.

Conversely, my weekday commute into London and back each day (75 miles round trip) sees around 20-21mpg if I can avoid the traffic and drive steadily and refrain from being a hooligan.

My previous, much shorter, 18 mile daily commute saw around 17mpg.

But it's all subjective. I never bought my SC for fuel economy, but it surprises me sometimes how little fuel these things use when the road conditions are favourable. Si. <This is my name.

Concur with the above. I only do between 5000 & 6000 miles per annum so don't sweat too much about the consumption! Still grimace when filling up from empty though! Previous cars:
S-Max 2007-2013 (only diesel I've had, good car but expensive when diesely bits go wrong, so what's the point?)

Sounds good. I leave for the Czech Republic Friday afternoon so interested to see what mpg I get. It's always nice to get good mpg in a car like this. I got 28.8mpg in my M5 on a trip down to the Nurburgring which I was very pleased with.

cheers Alex

I am always happy if mine clears 20mpg on a decent run, but including Cornwall use and having seen how you drive it Skot, I would take 19 Smile 4.2 Supercharged Vogue SE

Having seen how low I can get mine when giving it the beans, I'm guessing it'd do somewhere between 1 and 3mpg if you got it on the track. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

For once I looked at the lpg consumption, with this forum in mind. Just did Perigueux/Lyon and back. Quite a few steep parts on this mainly good a and B roads. Got an average of 17.6 mpg on 1060 km on LPG. When possible I cruised around 80/90 mls p/h. So I was in fact quite happy. Moneywise there is not a big difference between my wife's 2.8 turbo diesel Voyager and my 4.4 RR and I really prefer the RR.

Having petrol V8's for many years I never worried about mpg, the last few long runs with the family in the FF mpg was showing 22.5,mixed A , B and moterway roads, on my commute the lowest has only been 14.3, and thats on B roads.
Far better than the old D1 3.9 which at best only returns 14 and when on 12 car rallies years ago with it I got her down to 8 mpg. If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

No idea as never reset it for a lap, just an overall consumption figure of the drive there, 15 laps, a track day at Spa and then home again would average out at about 18mpg.

Probably get around 9mpg on a lap I would have thought

NOT in a petrol V8 you can't. Shocked To get that, I'd have to have it on the back of a lorry. Mr. Green
