Interesting to know. On the way home yesterday it stayed at a constant 13.5v for about 10 minutes and then dropped to a constant 12.5v thereafter. I was wondering if anything regulated the alternator output or whether it just always gave everything it had... 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 automatic (LHD), Santorini Black

Frankrizzo it sounds like you have a failing alternator, you need to test with a bit more load on it. It should stay up in the high 12s with mucho load on it. Put on the rear screen heater, front screen heater, heated seats front and back, when running obvoiously.

I've picked up four voltmeters over the years, when I fitted a voltmeter to mine it seemed to read low so I checked it with the other four... There was a 2volt difference between them, and the one I think is closer to the truth was a cheaper one of the four..

That would annoy me immensly as I've just had a new one fitted. I did try sticking aircon, stereo and seat cooling on and that didn't change the voltage at all but I didn't try anything else. Will have to do it on a wet night where I can do lights and wipers as well... 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 automatic (LHD), Santorini Black

If its not dropping then you may be fine alternator wise, the main problem is the output breaking down under load. If it can cope with load being applied without the voltage dropping then it sounds ok to me, when mine was on its way out the voltage would spike to way over 15v as the charge phase kicked in and then settle in the low 12v range, but when I switched stuff on the voltage would drop to around 11v.

I have just replaced my alternator with a brand new denso unit and it shows 14.30 volts after running for a while. If I switch everything on (seats, f & rear screens etc) it drops to 14.20v |

I din't know about the diagnostics screen until yesterday so it intreagued me to check both. I have just done it and it is 13.8 on the screen and 14.12 on the volt meter.

I might pick myself up a volt meter. Had 14v on the screen for the whole journey home today (about 30 minutes), the highest I've seen it so far... 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 automatic (LHD), Santorini Black
