MY dads "02" plate TD5 defender is showing a shuttle valve failure on his Hawkeye.
I've googles the part and found a replacement on ebay.
But, where does it go. I cant se something that looks like the photo on ebay.

Hi Geoff, the shuttle is part of the modulator unit (next to the brake pedal box on a defender, just inside the wing). Its a pain to get to on defenders, disco2s have the same set up but much easier access. To get a better view you have to remove the wing side air intake Rolling Eyes

I believe the pump has to be removed, to access the bottom of the ABS pump, to fit the new shuttle valve.

Never done one on a Defender, but done plenty on D2's Thumbs Up

Bare in mind that a new shuttle valve switch pack is not necessarily the fix. The pins that the pack fits into inside the modulator can be the problem as the solder joints crack over time. Also the earths need checking for corrosion and wiring for broken cores which are obviously simpler and cheaper fixes.
I'm in the middle of sorting a mates D2 with the same issue. Wiring has checked out (earths cleaned up as they were corroded). A new switch pack made no difference. I resoldered the pins and that hasn't sorted it either. Just arranging to do the final fix which is bypassing the pins inside completely and wiring it in directly.

In answer to your question though the shuttle valve switch pack is underneath the unit, opposite side to where the brake pipes enter/exit and under the pump. Assuming it's the same as the D2 unit, it's held in by 3 x 4mm hex head screws (4mm Allen key). On the D2 you don't need to completely remove the unit to sort it, the brake pipes can remain connected and the module can be eased up to allow enough working room underneath but it's a bit of a fiddle, no idea of the Defender though.

As stated above, the SVS is located on the underside of the brake modulator. I did this mod on my Disco TD5 (I am having a problem linking to the original BVI LR Club site) and haven't had a repeat of the problem. Do a Google search on the 3 amigos and you will get a few links to the mod.

It can be done on the Disco without removing the modulator but I found it such a fiddle that I took the modulator out and did it on the bench. From what has been said above, it would appear you may have to do likewise.

If the modulator is removed you will need to purge the system of air. It can be done with Hawkeye although some have said they have been able to do it by normal bleeding methods Question John
