What is it about the L322 then?

Obviously people using the forum - like other forums - will include many enthusiasts but what is it about these cars that has so many people aspiring, hooked, obsessed, captivated, enjoying them (or in some sorry cases, desperate for the day they can enjoy them!) ?

Is it just the L322 or is it all Range Rovers?

It's the L322 and the classic. I don't think it was ever the case with the P38, and it's a bit early to tell with the L405 - although early signs are looking good.

I just think that BMW in the early 2000's was brilliant. They did RR, Mini and the Range Rover and instead of looking at styling cues and empirical numbers they first got a very good feel for the product, something Land Rover themselves had at the time forgotton. They weren't affraid to reinvent a product along different lines but with the same meaning.

IMHO, quite simply the best car built in recent times Bow down (BUT, and it's a big BUT, I can't afford an L405 Banging Head(YET!!) so my opinion may differ if Camelot can ever be bothered to select the correct winning numbers which I submit to them weekly without fail!! Drove the L405 for a little bit over 6 month, and it's a fabulous car! Better build quality, better around corners and more stable when driving fast on highways. And....I didn't have the "knocking" noise Thumbs Up

But now that I'm back on the L322 I don't really miss it. Maybe it's because I'm not a "speeder" and enjoying the Range Rover feeling Thumbs Up Whereas the L405 drives more like a car.

After owning several 'decent'ish cars (Ford Siera XR4x4, couple of Granada 2.8 Ghia X Estates, couple of Alfa's), as we showed Rottweillers and travelled around the country quite a bit, we took the plunge and bought our first Range Rover which was a 1987 3.5 V8 Manual (carburettor) and absolutely loved it! For one reason or another we sold it and I think went back to a normal car, didnt last long! Our next one was a 3.9 Injection V8 Auto, we had 2 of those, then got a 4.6 P38 (all petrol) which we had for 11 years, and now a 4.4 V8 (petrol) L322, which, although not as reliable as the P38 is still a very good looking and sounding car!

Once you have owned a Range Rover, there is just nothing else that comes close. And I still dont think the Evoque should be badged as a Range Rover!

Sorry David but i do not agree... When released, the P38a was a massive step forward from the VERY aged classic! As was the L322 BUT.......... And it's a BIG controversial BUT!!! I personally was disappointed with the 405... NOT the massive step forward i was hoping it would be!

Don't get me wrong... I really like the 405 and desperately want one, but! I don't have the earge like i did with the P38 & the 322 to run out and sell a kidney, as i HAVE to have one NOWWWW... "you get my point" Thumbs Up

Not sure it is any one thing really, the fact the likes of Liz drives one helps new people to the brand but for others its just an experience, I know mine was purely because my Grandfather had them and drove like a lunatic which to a young lad is everything! It was def only that as my love affair started way to young to be influenced by anything else.

RE P38s I think u will see price rises there, as classics become stupid money, the P38 is a much more modern car. And I have to say from personal experience of me and many I knew who owned them, their reputation is very much undeserved.

My p38 never missed a beat or threw a wobbly which is more than I can say for my TDV8. Which I have now got rid of and have gone back to a p38. They are big, cool, fast, comfy, capable cars, and if maintained properly from knowing 8 personally, none of them have done anything naughty.

I genuinely got back into my p38 and whilst of course accepting there is a marked difference in the interior compared to newer RRs it is not that backwards a step as you might think, esp compared to classics, which whilst v cool are still a much more dated car power and comfort wise. 2011 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 TDV8

Due to my Job I've pretty much driven the main production Cars from Basic to Hypercar I'm invovled in the German R&D forums etc and in my opinion the only two cars that I truly like are The Mercedes SLS & the Range Rover L322 & L405 (my job car) I've plenty of kit a 50th V8 110 Xtec etc etc, if I had to go down to one it would be the Range Rover all day long Just my opinion Thumbs Up

With 50 years of 2 and 4 wheel motoring behind me including circuit racing (2 and 4 wheel) and having owned P38 and L322 Range Rovers for past 20 years I can confirm that the L322 TD6 is a very fine car. P38s are now becoming enshrined due to age but the L322 is far superior in all aspects. I know nothing about latest series of RR and hope they are as good.
Amongst many other cars (M3, Lexus, Discovery 2 etc) I have a 2003 TD6 Vogue with 130,000 miles - it still runs 100%, gives 35 mpg on the motorway with not too heavy foot and looks about 3 years old ! Secret is to keep on top of any small problems and have ready access to computer fault finding. I may change to TDV8 soon but am in no hurry.

The L322 (and Range Rovers in general) just hit a certain 'right' note that is so satisfying.

I said to my son recently that I don't think I'll ever be without a Range Rover. We'll see, though.

The alternatives I strongly considered as replacements of late (A8 and S-Class) just didn't compare. Nowhere near the feeling or satisfaction.

Certain models appeal more, though. The 2-door Classic, naturally, but also an early carb-fed four door Classic and, clearly, the SC L322. Pure icons of each bodystyle to me. Never bettered.

I've never been in, or driven, a P38 or L405. Can't comment. I think the P38 is getting better as it gets older, though. Si. <This is my name.

I had to ask because I was really interested to know the views of RR owners old and new. I'm sure potential owners would be interested too.

The many insightful replies have not disappointed either.

The L322 is not just the perfect car, but, The perfect Range Rover!
The Classic is also very good.

The main point I must say, is that there is a special, but similar feeling, when you enter each of the previous generations of RR's. I can't really fathom why, or what the feeling is. If you take out the build date, you could enter a Classic and say, I could trade my L322 for this. Each one gives you a sense of fulfillment. Even driving a p38, you get the same feeling.
Don't know if it's got to do with the airiness of the cabin, the proportions, the command driving position, or any other thing, but the truth is that CSK got it absolutely right and so did the Bimmer guys on capturing the essence of the car.

I drove a L405 recently, and even though it is a marvelous car, in the end, it is a car. You don't get the RR felling when driving it. There is no command driving position. On a L322 you can maneuver it on the tightest of spaces, whereas with the L405 you can't position the car correctly. Goes like stink (the 4.4tdv8), corners impeccable, but in the end there no event. EVO mag had ''the knowledge'' in the back of the mag. The RR had a - on weight, thirst, performance, but a + and a big + on ''makes every journey an event''

That pretty much sums it all...
