Hi all, having installed a reversing camera into my 53/2004 Vogue, I thought that I'd try and get my head around the the issues of installing a bluetooth system into my ride. But I'm getting a wee bit confused as to how to go about it.
Set up ; standard Vogue system, it's a non touch screen satnav, there is no DSP button on the lower dash / centre console but it does have DSP as an option on the nav screen set up display. CAN I FIT AN AFTERMARKET Bluetooth unit?
I have a Motarola TK30 unit, BUT, I would prefer to fit something like the Grom Audio BT3, so that I can retain steering controls. I have gone round and round the forums and trolled the endless web sites, and I'm now totally confused
My car don't have the logic 7 thingy, and the speakers in the doors are plain and DO NOT say Harmon Kardon, does this mean that I don't need the digital converter thing?
Does this mean that I can fit the Grom Audio BT3 with the BMW-T kit, and if I use an Ipod lead will I be able to control the Ipod from the wheel? And more importantly will it be plug and play, or will I have to do a major rewire?
Any guidance that you can give will greatly received, other that take it to a specialist to be ripped off!

I've gone the BMW ulf route as I wanted it to all be factory BMW fit.

As to your queries, you will have DSP and you will have Harman Kardon system, but not logic 7.

It doesn't say anything on the speakers.

You will need an interface of some sort to talk on the ibus and use the wheel controls and mute radio etc.

Is it really that much cheaper and easier than going the factory route ?

The main reason for fitting the Grom is that I can link to my phone by bluetooth and at the same time I can hook up an Ipod. The cost is about £126, and it claims to be plug and play. That would seam to me to be about the same cost as a BMW ulf, without the rewire of the plug and also have the ability to plug in the Ipod and another source (2 Aux inputs), with out the need of additional modules.

Also I really don't think that I have the phone wiring in the car:-

1, I do not have the Voice recognition button on the steering wheel
2, I do have the phone symbol on the radio/nav head but there is NO telephone on the menu screen
3, there is no phone dock in the top of the centre console

For these reasons I would imagine that installing the factory system would be missions, if not impossible.

I also have a Motarola TK30 handsfree unit, which worked well in my old Landcruiser (forgive me for the foul language). This is like a parrot, gives you handsfree on 2 phones at a time and will connect to the Ipod, but it requires to be connected to an ISO connector.... and I don't think that anyone makes a SOT lead for the Vogue.

You don't need the voice control button to use a ulf and you don't need a phone in the centre console.

You won't have telephone on the screen until the system identifies itself on the ibus.

The rewire is simple and involves no soldering, just moving the connectors into new sockets.

You'd need a microphone and a Bluetooth antenna.

........that is of course the ulf route.

You could then have the phone book through the car and scroll through it using the steering wheel buttons. The radio would auto mute etc.

I am sure there are looms available to go another route. Probably not cheap though.

Baris on this forum can supply connectors etc to connect an iPod etc to aux in on the factory system. It goes to the bm54 radio module.

If you can get the functionality you require using a different route that's cool. Just not sure the loom is gonna be cheap.

That said, there will be diagrams on here and on various BMW forums about linking iPods and phone kits etc.

There was a Nokia kit in mine when I bought it, and connected through the plug in the boot to the amp, with wiring going to the front of the car.

Never used it before I removed it, so no idea how well it integrated.

I've looked into the Bm54 upgrade and its rather alot of dosh for a 3.5mm aux jack. If the Grom unit can be made to work, it will give me steering wheel control of the Ipod and the ability to take handsfree calls. How much info I get on the nav screen is a mystery!! The main point of confusion is, when you look at the manufacturer application list it only lists HSE without nav, but when you look at the X5 list it says it will do the nav (non touch). Surely we are talking about the same system????????

The systems are the same as in the E39 5 series and E53 X5. As you know, the setup is totally different from the standard HSE spec and one with nav. I think the non screen setup is referred to as a MID system if you look in the manuals.

I can't see how it can work with the nav system in one and not the other. All I will say is that MID system is much simpler with all the connections in the front.

Best to check with them before spending any money.

Right I've just taken the plunge and ordered the Grom bluetooth unit, it would appear that the confusion was being caused by the fact that the Americans HSE spec is not the same as the UK spec HSE, and that it comes with the non touch sat nav as std. Why can't they just have the same models as the rest of the world? It would make a lot less confusing
The total cost with optional Ipod lead (4.6m) was £130.97 including carriage and vat, I will let you know how it all goes in time.....47 hours and 54minutes... not that I'm counting

So thats 2 more sleeps then........?

The HSE is the top spec in the US. I don't think they took to the Vogue magazine linke we did, so the reference is a bit wasted on them.

Sounds like it should do the job, for perhaps cheaper than a 2nd hand ulf.
