Main Dealer - worst nightmare

Yesterday we had the front discs and pads changed on our 2 year old Westminster at our 'new' local main dealer under warranty.
This evening, I noticed that one of the discs had light rust on the last inch of the disc face. I know that this is normally caused by the pad not reaching the outer edge because of a major problem. Upon closer examination by torchlight I really couldn't believe what I saw.

The pad was loose, had come out and was resting against the hub.

To say that I'm furious at this point would be an understatement!

I will contact them first thing but the car isn't going anywhere. They will have to send a mechanic or recover it.

My other half was driving the car today but luckily didn't do many miles but she was meant to be driving down to Hertfordshire today. That is what is annoying me most as it could have really turned into a nightmare.

I know that everyone makes mistakes BUT not on brakes and especially at a very large main dealer!

I can beat that ! 10 years ago I was driving a discovery 2 which had new front pads at the main agent. The front calliper dropped off and fell back into the wheel rim whilst I was driving on the motorway - the bolts that hold it on hadn't been tightened up. Needless to say I went absolutely nuts with them - LR Assust had to recovery it 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

I feel for you Chap. Been there myself many years ago (1985 actually) and since that day I have never let a garage of any description do brakes on any of our family cars. I do them, that way I know they're done right.

It really is the perfect advert for why everyone should learn exactly how to do brakes. After all, they're not difficult and even if you do still use a garage you at least have enough knowledge to make meaningful checks on their work.

It is really sad that a few bad eggs can ruin things for everyone but it truly is like playing Russian Roulette. Yeah, only one chamber's loaded but which one? To hell with playing that game, there's only one person I trust with my family's safety thanks. Me! Give them holy merry hell, with solid brass knobs on.

You might also want to read my post in this thread. This was a few weeks back. The car was inspected whilst I was having tyres fitted and clearly demonstrates why the assumption must be that all dealers are twisting, incompetent, lying twunts until they prove otherwise and the only way you can do that is to check their work.

Good luck with them, and make sure they give you a lot of good reasons why you shouldn't send the evidence direct to Land Rover. Thumbs Up

Your best option is to bypass the franchise - contact Land Rover directly.
They will be very interested -

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

Contacted the garage who couldn't understand what had happened. They then sent a technician, equipped with tools who arrived promptly and removed the wheel.
We found that the locating pin had been pushed in and had missed the top of the pad. This caused the pad to fall (for want of a better expression) and rest against the hub.

This was replaced after not suffering any terminal damage and the other side was checked for the sake of completeness and found to be correct.

They drove off into the sunset but the garage have not called to explain or apologise so I think that's it's only right and proper that this is brought to the attention of Land Rover direct.

I will then see what response I get from them.

The whole idea of a licensed, professional mechanic is to ensure that this doesn't happen. Broken components are cheap, even new cars aren't too bad, but when it's safety and lives are at stake, then things get very expensive. Evil or Very Mad

Last weekend I was travelling through the Coast mountains. There's mile after mile of 20% grade on curvy roads with steep drop offs. I wouldn't fancy the chances of anyone with failed breaks, especially in a car as heavy as a Range Rover.
