Reminds me of a flying lesson I had a few years ago:

If the engine quits and you are FORCED to land in a field that's too short, you have to choice of hitting the first fence at the start of the field, or the one at the other end. If you hit the first fence, you altitude is a few feet and speed probably 55-60 mph (in the airplane I was flying). If you hit the second fence, you've already touched down, altitude = 0, and speed is slower, probably a LOT slower. So, which fence do you want to hit? Whistle

Take home lesson, land the plane properly given the terrain, THEN worry about stopping!
