Hi all, I have the flappy loose mirror problem that seem to haunt the L322, having read a lot of posts on the wonder web, I have come to the conclusion that the gearbox and gears are worn out / broken. How have I arrived at this I hear you ask, basically the O/S mirror does the Dumbo thing when folded ( in/out in/out ) and the N/S don't move, but the motor goes crazy. When I have had the misfortune to have a heavy handed passenger, the N/S mirror moves when the door is shut.
When you grab hold of said mirror there is little or no resistance to movement and the hole thing wobbles up and down. I removed the cover and found that there was a lot of play up and down at the base where the mirror goes onto the arm. So rather than destroying the mirror further, I decided to search the web for a fix it solution.
From what I can tell the mirror is the same as the X5 under the skin, and I'm guessing that the parts are interchangeable. You can buy new gears and the motor casing ( with the 2 lugs that snap off) for around £60 the lot ( ebay, our saviour ). But I have yet to find the bottom cap to the motor that I suspect is worn on mine. As I'm looking for a quick fix that doesn't involve lots of overnight glue drying, I started to look at the other applications for the gears, mini cooper (bmw), Rover 75, Freelander. Conclusion I can get a working Rover 75 mirror for less than cost of the repair parts, but will they fit??? thats the £55 question.
Has anyone else gone down this route and did it end in tears? I do have access to someone at Jaguar and will be posing the question to them, as it would appear that all the ex BL cars use similar parts. Oh and don't bother looking for X5 mirrors to repair L322 ones, they are just as stupidly high priced![/i]

Yes I have, thats where I came to the conclusion that I might have more than a 1 hour job on my hands. I can't afford to disable the car for more than half a day, as its a working vehicle. I'm looking for temporary fix so that I can rebuild the worn gearbox at leisure.

Hmmm, 2nd hand (working?) ones, complete, from breakers going for @ £150 .

Exactly , Because the mirror fits a Range Rover, they think of a number times it by 8 and add a zero on the end. They also do the same for BMW, however because Rover is a less popular choice the prices remain at a sensible level
This is where the thought crossed my mind (didn't have far to go ), will the guts of another BMW / Rover car fit. All I'm going to do is rob the motor assy and fit it into the flappy half dead mirror on my steed. I'm just wondering if if a fellow tight git has already done this, or if a fellow member has a careless wife / child with mini / rover / freelander, with a broken power fold mirror. Who can confirm that the guts look the same
