Eugene, buy a V8 S-Class over a P38.

If it's a choice between an S320 and a V8 P38, then the RR. Si. <This is my name.

Eugene, traffic photos from the third world often show very old Mercs still soldiering on when other cars would have quit. When it comes time to sell, I would imagine there's always a market for a good, solid Merc sedan. No idea on prices there, but if you're getting into Bangernomics territory, it really doesn't matter. Very Happy The LR club here has folk who say that "modern Land Rovers" can't get repaired overseas and won't consider anything newer than a Defender Tdi. Range Rover Mk2s are sophisticated beasts. Can you get them repaired there without undo expense or agrivation?

On the P38 plus side, while on not a fan of the exterior, the interior is great and they drive very nicely. What are to thinking, 4.0, 4.6 or a diesel?

The P38 would be 4.6 lit. and the prices range from 4200 GBP to 5500 GBP (years 1995-1997).
The S class is virtually all 280s and 320s (mainly 320) and range from 2500 GBP to 5500 GBP same year range.

Although I might give the really cheap ones a quick look to see if there is a gem hidden under fading paint, but I'm looking in the same price range (I capped it at 5.5k or 30kMYR) more or less.

I have always wanted to drive a S-class since my uncle took me for a drive in his brand new 280 SE (mid/late 80's model), it was so quiet and comfortable at that time I was mesmerized by it the proverbial magic carpet. The ones here are much younger than that and some of them are the all options models from what I gather, so I'm expecting something really nice to drive even though they are 15+ years old. Note there is a 280 SE (85) for sale at 1000 GBP Smile.

The P38s I can't find in Johor so I would need to travel to Selangor (or Penang for the cheapest on the list, although I could get one of the forum members to help me out with the initial look at the car) and that would be a bit inconvenient (although I'm going up to KL this Sunday to visit a friend so could squeeze a look in).

So the smart thing for several reasons is go for a S-class and they are the most reliable cars by quite a big margin compared to P38s. And since it is only for 6 months anyway (I might keep it around in case I have to go to "dodgy" places like shipyards, factories, fab shops etc.) it doesn't matter. I can always get a P38 (first a Classic though) if/when we move to New Zealand in the not too distant future and start my collection Smile.

As for fixing cars here, I think the Benz would be easy as there are so many around but the P38 would be the same as my 4.2 in Nigeria, I would do the fault finding, get the parts and the workshop would do the "dirty work". There are dozens of shops here and they are cheap. Still the Benz would make the most sense as it would be the least likely one to need a shop regularly and irregularly if you know what I mean Wink .

If the 5.0 wasn't going to be here in half a year time, the P38 would have been the choice I guess Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

You can't go wrong. Before the FFRR, the others I considered was the S500 and SL500 (Merc doesn't sell the smaller engines over here). I was underwhelmed with the SL, but the S class is a VERY nice car.

I think it will be the S-class, if I can find a decent one (chances are high since there is plenty choice).

Although I just found another contender, a BMW 528i.............. mmmmmmmmmm what to do....... MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
