Brake Question

Just been to see a 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE and on the last MOT advisory, it says the front brake discs both side are pitted and worn and the brake pads are wearing thin. Its a private sale and I'm very tempted to make an offer, but wondering what these will cost me to get done next year (hoping to use this as a bargaining tool Smile ) The MOT is only a month or two old, but is due a service (last one was at 85k, I assume this will be due at 100k (its done 96). Seems a lovely car and subject to a AA / Warranty direct check over I'm thinking of taking it Smile

Thanks for all your help.

Cheers

Paul

Apologies if I've posted this in the wrong section

theres a site sponsor (advanced factors) that is selling brembo disc and pads for around £160 delivered so it might be wise to buy now and fit later.. ... - .- -.

Thanks Stan, unfortunately I don't know one end of a spanner from another, so wondering what the fully fitted price would be. Tried calling the local Landover Specialist, but he's not answering the phone today.

Seems to be an absolutely cracking car just these couple of niggles and sadly no rear screens (first SE I've seen without, but my daughter will have to make do with her iPad Laughing )

Seriously thinking of ringing back and making an offer, I may be too late anyway as they have another viewing this afternoon. Fortunately in no rush as my car doesn't go back till 1st September, sadly seem to have been bitten by the bug and can't wait to get one Laughing

And I paid £208 for the front Brembo disc/pad set from AF just a few months ago. It was a good price then. It's a fantastic price now!

They can be fitted within an hour or two. Between £100 to £200 labour depending on who does it (I got special rate so what I paid wouldn't be reflective I doubt)

Good luck with your search.

Thumbs Up

Question My main agent charges £586.96 pads and discs all genuine LR for the front set on a 4.4 V8 Diesel if its any help for comparison and £388.08 for just the front pads.

It can be done for under £200 by an independent using pattern parts - did this on my last RR, brakes worked well - the alloys just got absolutely covered in horrible greasy brake dust = genuine pads are worth the extra if money is no object

The 4.4 is massively more expensive than the 3.6 for front brakes, because it has 6 pot calipers.

Its 1 hour labour, any independant and non specialist garage should be able to handle it. There are suppliers on here (af and dan at duckworts) i paid Dan around £50 per disc and £30 for the pads last year, plus £65 for fitting. So around £200 in total. Not mega bucks, lr will relieve you of around £400 for the priviledge. I would go with gen parts (brembo discs and pads) either LR boxed or Brembo branded.

Nice easy fix if the rest of the car looks fine! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks guys for all the help. Just made an offer of a grand under asking on the basis it needs the brakes doing and a service. Waiting nervously for an answer whilst the guys discusses with his wife.

Don't know anything about cars so have said everything is subject to a check over by an expert. Does anyone know anything about LRS Engineering in Sible Headingham. They're local so I'm hoping to get them to have a look for me.

Walking the dogs whilst waiting for an answer. If it goes through this could be either the best or worst deal of my life Laughing bit concerned that 96k is too much milage, but its the cheapest 2008 I've seen

If its been looked after and serviced well 96k is nothing - barely run in. These vehicles have a massive V8 Diesel engine - it's not a Nissan Micra with a 950cc sewing machine for an engine - I am sure it will be fine Very Happy

Last service was just over about 15 months ago at 85k seems to have been done at roughly 10-15k intervals is this correct?

Yes, 12 months or up to 15k miles usually depending on driving style - the computer senses how much fuel has been burned and type of driving and calculates the service interval 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Java Black

I bought 4 Brembo discs and pads for £290 from AF (as above)

Local garage charged me £198 fitting
So whisker under £500 all done, pleased to read that's half what main stealer charges !
Consider rear calipers too , search previous threads... But cost effective to change whilst doing the rest apparently

Well doesn't look like I got it Crying or Very sad

They've got someone viewing tomorrow and want to see what they say

Mmmm a yes or no to my offer was kind what I was looking for, don't mind if someone says no, but hate to be left hanging. If he does phone back tomorrow I'm going to say the price has gone down by £250 Laughing

Or at least I would if they didn't seem really nice if somewhat indecisive people

Fingers crossed for you Thumbs Up If you do get it, I would definitely only consider replacing the pads with genuine parts.

Similar to one of the posts earlier, our FF had been serviced by an independent before we got her, and was fitted with motaquip (aftermarket) pads - no issues with stopping, but following a seized piston in one of the rear callipers, I fitted genuine parts from Dan @ Duckworths, since then the back wheels stay reasonably clean between washes, Very Happy but the front ones are covered with unsightly black dust within a couple of hundred miles. As I feared missed out on this one, probably offered too little, but was expecting a counter offer tbh. Ahh well back to the drawing board. Thanks for all the help though.
