Slight thumping noise

For the past few weeks been getting a slight thumping noise which is only detectable at low speeds on smooth roads. The noise is in time with wheel rotation and disappears (or can't be heard) above about 40 mph.
There is no vibration in the steering and no other symptoms and turning left/right has no effect. Tyres are half worn Pirelli Scorpions on standard 19 inch rims. Indie tried to locate noise but said he couldn't hear anything - must be deaf!
Checked tyres for stones, flat spots etc and nothing apparent but its starting to annoy me as beginning to think it may be worn U/J's. Wife says turn up the radio and quit moaning.
Any help/suggestions appreciated!
