SC Gearbox problem

Taking my SC into dealer tomorrow to take them for a test drive to show what is happening with seriously harsh gear change on kick down. It has been in twice already and they have updated software but I think from reading other posts this is a physical prob something is not right. It has a delay on changing down and then a really hard thump into gear but only when travelling quite quick so we shall see.
Will keep posted on outcome in case anyone else has this problem

Hi Sandyt, can you please get the fault codes read as to give us an idea.

My first guess and suggestion is the now notorious solenoid problem. There are a few posts on that. Below post is my saga.

RRPhil helped a lot here and by now the problem (probably also mine) has been traced to a single solenoid instead of the entire set. EDS3 seems to be the culprit and SKOT is one of the people that was the first that got the "cheap"resolution (after his entire box apart from the Mechatronic was replaced, so cheap is a relative term in his case ;( ).

If it is the solenoid, then it is a cheap problem (all relative of course). Just have a search with the gearbox and ZF as terms and you will see. Yours is the ZF 6HP26 if I'm correct.

Thanks ebajema will do I had read your posts which got me thinking I still have LandRover warranty on the car but so far everything I have tried to have fixed on it has been "wear and tear" so am not expecting a lot. Interestingly both times they looked at it they say there are no fault codes personally I don't think they read them just assumed it was a software issue. With your permission I will show them your posts on this.

Dealer is taking it in and going to send readings from the gbox and the engine to the factory - they have logged the fault with the warranty company. To be honest they were very good and want to get it resolved before the warranty runs out next feb. Will keep you posted

Don't get me started on fault codes! My D1V8 had the alternator back it in. By the time I got to the mechanic's place, I was on about three cylinders as petrols don't tend to work very well without electricity. No fault codes. Now everything is running nicely, I get random fault codes (and as it the D1 not an FFRR, I just ignore them).

Back on topic, some code readers will only read ENGINE fault codes but the Bong of Doom should have something to say. Good luck!

Update on gearbox prob dealer has had it for a week they have sent all the readings from the engine and gearbox to Landrover Technical at the factory who came back with a check for any metal flakes in the transfer box - they have found them and have been advised by Landrover technical to replace the gearbox and transfer box Landrover Warranty sending assessor tomorrow
So we shall see

Have you got the LR "Select" warranty Sandy?

Our gearbox was 'serviced' less than 12 months ago via the main dealer and at that time their Master Tech reported no metal flakes/ everything all in order.

They did all of the work because I'd noticed a slight oil leak. The sump and surrounding underbody areas looked wet. They replaced the gearbox sump and the sump seal which involved draining existing oil, replacing with new oil and putting a new filter in (new oil & filter should help to prolong gearbox life apparently). At that time, I was told that a service was due on these ZF gearboxes around 100k miles and it was only in the 60k plus bracket at the time.

Very curious about your situation due to having had 'preventative work' done and because ours has the LR Select warranty for another 2 years yet.

Yes I have the select warranty and in fact they had twice done software updates - small improvement but when I went back to dealer they wanted to get the fault logged as on 97k and warranty runs out next feb and won't be replaced due to milage. It was the factory that gave them the info will keep you informed as to what happens

Right Gents here is an update
Gearbox drained and metal filings in the fluid dealership spoke to Landrover Technical at factory recommended new gearbox so far all in agreement so assessor arrives from Landrover Warrant (Select) and says he wants a double flush new oil and new filter done and then retested and if fault persists new gearbox so all in agreement until they say I have to pay 880 quid for said double flush etc Dealership is astounded at the decision so I phone landrover customer services and got the nothing to do with us mate they are a separate company Well done Landrover you are stars ( I will be following that one up as I am sure that Landrover must get some financial reward for each warranty sold ) So on to the Warranty company who point blank refuse to pay for flush. I pointed out that neither the dealership nor Landrover Technical thought it was appropriate and it was only their assessor - I asked if he was a loss adjuster or a Landrover Trained Gearbox Engineer mm Still waiting for the reply. Anyway I have given the go ahead to the garage to do the flush and will pay and when the fault comes back they will put a new gearbox in. My point was that I would only ask them to reimburse me if the fault returned still no go until I happened to mention that I was taping the conversation and was sending a transcription with other communications to the Financial Ombudsman and my solicitor and that I had only just discovered that they were not part of Landrover so there is a fair amount of misselling going on now of course it is have the flush done and if the fault returns then please speak to us before you do anything.

Oh the quote for the gearbox etc was 5886.43 plus VAT of course happy days

Nightmare situation. So often the warranty is just not worth the paper it's written on.

You can buy the only approved ATF & OEM Filter kit on ebay for just over £200. If you supply the parts do you think the dealer would help you out with the labour costs? If you plead your situation / position they may be sympathetic?

Or failing that, buy the parts get an indy to do it. As long as the correct parts / specs are used, under block exemption rules you can chose who does the work and for them to force you to use an LR dealer is considered non competitive and therefore illegal. 2006 4.2 SC

To be honest I want to pay the silly money as it will motivate me to nail them - and I will Its not that I can't afford it its that they are being unreasonable its just a waste of a grand because I know it won't solve anything and so does the dealership - The dealership have offered to do it at cost and half labour rate as I have them do other work so it will be less
I am quite looking forward to the war as I hate this its my bat and my ball type attitude. I even said to the guy at the warranty company "What would happen if your assessor said change the front nearside headlight and the gearbox problem will be resolved- reply well if he said that we would insist on that happening absolutely moronic.
