Hi,

Thanks to AF, the new rear TRW calipers, along with the new rear Brembo brake discs and pads arrived today

Pictured is A - New rear driver's side TRW caliper; &

Pictured is B - The existing grubby caliper and [caliper arm/ bracket?]

What can I do with the grubby caliper arm/ bracket to clean it and replicate the look of the new TRW caliper because both will be in view through the wheel spokes and it will look rubbish with a shiny new silver hammer finish caliper, a grubby old arm and nice carbon grey new Brembo discs?

Only problem is, they're all due to get fitted this Saturday so it's not like I can dismantle all myself and take my time tidying up the arm before putting the new parts on.

Any thoughts welcome and apologies for not knowing what the grubby caliper arm/ bracket is called

Thanks, so:

1. Does one prep, brush paint or spray the calipers and associated parts in situ/ can a good job be done without dismantling them all and removing them to paint (i.e that caliper arm/ bracket)?

2. Should I prepare and paint that caliper/arm bracket before the new brake calipers/ discs etc are put on or after (for example, if I decide to finish the arm in the same hammer silver colour as the new calipers)?

2. Stan, have you overpainted the front caliper Brembo logos in black and therefore banished them?

Sorry for the daft questions but they're only daft if you know the answers.

The bracket arm you are talking of is the carrier.
Your problem is that they have to stay on your car until your new calipers are fitted.
If you want a professional job of it, they'd have to be painted off the car, or at least with the carriers out of the way.
You could scout breakers on ebay for the carriers so you could prepare & paint them before the calipers are fitted, or wait until after fitment and "do a Stan" (with respect, Stan . . . ). With the calipers in situ, you'd probably be better off using something like a Dremel tool for preparation.

I was faced with the same scenario. My car had a fresh coat of "BS black"on all four calipers & carriers. I sourced four from a breaker and have had them blasted before I painted them myself using VHT branded & Halfords branded VHT paint. Just need fitting now . . . .

 Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

The calliper carrier (thats what its called ) are only cheap new from JLR... Less than £20 per side...

You could then either, have them all fitted looking new together? Or, paint the four bits separately before you get them fitted

i did spray over the brembo logo ryan...i'll get some stickers off ebay and re-apply the logo..

btw, not much prep ,just a wipe down with a cloth... ... - .- -.

I painted mine in situ with silver smooth hammerite and a brush turned out great and saved a lot of hassle removing etc  Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

I painted and lacquered my new calipers after masking the piston. Had them done in advance of fitment. After paint I fitted new slider bolts etc.

I then removed the old calipers and sliders and painted the sliders. I scrubbed them with gunk, then wire brushed them. Then high temp primer, paint and lacquer in lots of thin coats. Gave them a quick wizz in the coolest oven in the aga between and all back on in 24 hours without the wife noticing. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

A quick note to all you keen DIYers reading this thread... If you paint your callipers DO mask off the threaded holes, bleed nipples and pistons where possible (especially on Brembo's) as A, the bolts can tighten on paint then work loose during braking VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!! & B, paint can affect the piston seals etc etc etc

If I just buy new caliper carriers as suggested by Craig:

1. Will that be better for the new calipers, i.e can components fail on the old/ existing carriers that could later hinder the performance of the new calipers?

2. Does removing the old caliper carriers and fitting new caliper carriers make the fitting of new calipers, discs and pads a more complicated and much more time consuming job or are we talking minutes to swap the old for new caliper carriers?
