Extended -v- Select Warranty

Received a personalised brochure from LR today inviting me to extend my extended warranty (!). You can choose between the two warranties and with or without roadside assistance which I see is provided by the AA.

Select costs £855, whilst Extended is £1,405 so I need to assess pros and cons Confused

The apparent list for Select is much shorter and is capped at a maximum item price of £3,000 + VAT. Some of the differences are not immediately obvious: Extended covers 'driveline' and driveline couplings' whereas Select covers only 'driveline'. Select covers 'gearbox' but not 'transmission' Rolling Eyes

For any kind soul here with a view on my decision, the FF has done 77,000 miles...

If you look at the wiki buyers guide, much mechanical/ maint work was covered under the Select Warranty and I can't think that much more could or would go wrong in 12 months ownership.

I got quoted £1050 in the last month to extend the Select Warranty (with breakdown cover) and I was quoted your £1400 odd for the Approved Extended, again with breakdown cover.

I've gone for Select as it has never let us down on this or the two previous 4 x 4 we've had when moving onto 'Select' after the first 3 years and/ or the end of what was the A.E warranty.

Yes, you can argue it's more limited than A.E. You can also argue that taking any kind of warranty is a calculated risk on the basis that you could spend the annual premium in one advance payment and never call upon it whether it's Select or A.E.

Factor in too that if you wanted the LR extended warranty last year, for your age of car you could only qualify for the Select Warranty. It's only recently that they've changed the policy qualifying older/ higher mileage cars (not that 70k + is high).

Taking all of that into account, my calculated risk was to renew on the Select basis because it's a very good warranty at, proportionately speaking, a fair price.

Or there's always the decision not to extend the warranty ?

I have an identical car to you, partly chosen for the lack of posts on the Forum relating to drivetrain failures.
I too looked at warranties after I bought the car a year ago. After looking at the costs and items covered I decided against it.
My car is serviced correctly by a Land Rover specialist who I've trusted for over 20 years & I'm a big fan of preventative maintenance.
Of the costs I've incurred so far, most would not have been covered by a warranty other than perhaps the radiator I had changed last week -

I am indeed considering not renewing. Then there's Warranty Direct and Warranty Wise. It's all too much.

or you could put the warranty money into a bank account and use it if and when something goes wrong, and if it doesnt then it can earn you a small interest. ... - .- -.

Look at it this way, if you are trying to keep your shareholders happy, do you really want to fork out for repairs to a very complex 80k mile nine year old car ? - I wouldn't !

I'd advise the pragmatic approach -

Hmm. Thinking about shareholders is a good point. There's a lot of value in being able to tell her 'Don't worry, it's covered by the warranty...' Very Happy

. . . but perhaps nothing worse than having to tell your good lady that said item was subsequently not covered by the warranty ?
Let's face it - it's a lottery owning any car nowadays !
We've been looking to replace our "Thunderbird One" car - ie runaround/mile muncher with a Mk 6 Golf diesel. Sensible choice you would presume, until you read up on them . . .
The VW Used Car website summed it up perfectly when I viewed the other day :
"if only everything in life were as reliable as a VW"
Immediately followed by -
"sorry, this service is currently unavailable"

It made me chuckle !
