4.4 Engine Noise

This has been discussed a few times in other posts but I thought I would give my opinion now I have had the chance to drive all three engine variants in various cars while we try to find the elusive solution to the suspension knocking.

So I now have a 4.4 diesel Vogue loaner. It is the first time I have driven one with this engine (and by the way it has the same suspension knocking as mine so they are still rolling off the line with the problem). My initial impressions are that this one has enough power to do justice to the vehicle whereas the 3.0 is slow off the line and lurches with a lot of turbo lag. The 4.4 does not have the same issue and I do not have the same feeling of needing to floor it often to get the required acceleration. However, wow it's so noisy! I thought the 3.0 diesel was noisy but this is something else. I am not a fan of diesels but when I drive them in BMWs and Mercs I don't find the noise too bad. Either the LR engines are not as refined or they need more sound deadening.

On a separate issue, the paddle shifters in Vogue spec are really nasty. I can't believe something so cheap and flimsy feeling has been used in a vehicle of this value when the rest of the cabin has a quality feeling.

Certainly less sophisticated at idle vs Supercharged (especially from outside). Only comparable figures I can find are from different tests:

SDV8: Idle - 46 dB; Max Revs 3rd - 72dB; 70 mph - 63 dB

Supercharged: Idle - 46 dB; Full Throttle - 75 dB; 70 mph - 67 dB

Are these sound levels outside or inside the car? Also do you have the 3.0 diesel for comparison?

Edit: Sorry just realised they must be for inside.

This is not very reliable given they are from different tests.

Agreed, but you'd imagine they'd be done with similar equipment under largely similar conditions. Will compare with other vehicles they've both tested to see how they correlate.

My subjective L322 experience suggests that there's not an appreciable difference in volume on the move, but the petrol is always going to sound smoother and more refined. Haven't had a go in a Supercharged L405.

Yes, I think that's it. When they are cruising they are all quiet enough. What I notice particularly is accelerating from rest through the first few gears. The petrol is much quieter and the 3.0 diesel is quieter than the 4.4 in my opinion.

I love the sound of the 4.4....I've never tried the 5.0 sc but subjectively sounds better than my old 4.2sc did which was all whine. Nice woofly v8 when pressing on and muted when not. Perfect compromise in my opinion.

Only fly in the ointment is that the engine is a bit too intrusive on that continental trip when you get into 3 figures.

I can't hear any woofle just diesel rattle.

Disagree about the old 4.2. I think that's the best of the lot. That has got a proper V8 woofle and is better than the 5.0 (unless you have a Sport and then the. 5.0 is brilliant)

agree - sounds rattly in the car - sounds good from the outside though, not that this is much compensation. prefer the 3.0 is this respect , it's a lot more refined as an engine. the V8 is a noisy old nail, effective yes but not refined enough for a 100k motorcar.

It would be a serious stretch to describe it as unrefined on the move, even if the TDV6 spins a bit more smoothly. Presumably comparing to the VAG V8 diesel?

compared to the 3.0 is seems rather rough - besides our car, I've tried a couple of the dealers demo's and they are the same. actually at one stage there was an awful resonance at 1,300 rpm but that turned out to be a loose heat shield. it's fine once you are doing more than 50 mph, but low speed acceleration and start up the noise is too much in my opinion for a 100k car.

when we replace it it'll be for a 3.0 I think, as the performance shortfall isn't enough of an issue to cancel out the refinement improvement.
