Anyone know what these sockets are for

Whilst fitting tow bar and electrics, I noticed these two sockets.

This one is behind the left hand boot panel:

The other is behind the right hand side panel:

Anyone know what they are for?

The big black multi plug is for connection to a telephone control module, so I'd imagine you don't have a phone in the front armrest.

It can be rewired however, and you can buy a second hand BMW ulf unit from the internet or such like, and aerial etc and you can add Bluetooth to your car to link to your mobile so you can call from the car etc.

Have a search for ulf or Bluetooth on here. Loads of info.

What the smaller plug is, I'm not sure.

If you fill in your car details in your profile we can know what model you have - I assume it's a pre facelift early car like mine.......

Cheers for that.

I thought I had filled in my car details, obviously didn't work.

It's a 2003 RR Vogue with the non-touchscreen sat nav.

AH OK, don't have one of those heaters (I don't think) so I will leave that plug well alone.

I'm a bit of a thicky with all the talk of bluetooth and ULFs so i will probably leave that alone as well.

I did think about changing to a later head unit for a better satnav, but even that seems way to complicated to me. I will stick with my stand alone satnav if I ever need it. And as I generaly ignore my mobile phone when i am driving, I will stick with that to.

You will have the fuel burning heater, it's standard on all td6's. All the plug is for is connecting it to an optional bit of kit that allows you to turn the heating on with a remote, whilst sat eating your breakfast on a frosty morning for instance.

As it stands, the fbh will kick in at temps less than 3 degrees when the engines cold, to help heat the cabin and water up faster, as the Diesel engine is that efficient it doesn't generate that much excess heat.

I am able to set mine with the computer screen in the dash to come on at a set time to warm the car up in the mornings.

Essentially, all the entertainment systems, sat nav, TV, hifi etc are all from bmw's so can be upgraded with later units from an x5 or a 5 series.

With a ulf, my car connects to my mobile automatically, even if the phone is still in my coat pocket. I can then call using the steering wheel buttons through the cars speakers, and go through the phones address book on the instrument cluster and dial hands free. Likewise, if a call comes in, the radio mutes and the in car microphone and speakers are used.

If you don't use your phone in the car, it'll not be much use to you, but good to know you can upgrade your car if you want to.

As you have a td6, if you do nothing else, change your crankcase breather filter for the later BMW vortex type. The standard one on our car has a habit of blocking up if overlooked when servicing, and shoves oil back up into the turbo. Not good.

OK that all sounds cool. I shall have a play with the computers settings for the heater, what should I look for?

I will change the filter as you advise.

This is probably a bit of overkill but with all my cars I do a full oil and filter change every 5000 miles max. Only use good quality oil and filters.

Lots of people have told me it's a waste of money but dear old Dad (who was a very highly qualified marine engineer) told me that it is the very best singe act of maintenance you can do.

I don't suppose you know the part number for the BMW breather filter?

I'm with you on the oil and filter change.

On the menu screen, it will say something like aux heat / vent. If it only says aux vent, you will not be able to have the heater come on, though vent will blow air through, so it can shove the hot air out on a hot day, if you set it to at a certain time. Ie I have mine aux vent at about 16:35 in the summer, as i finish work at 5. It's no cooler than outside, but not red hot like it would have been.

If you want to have aux heat as an option, you can turn it on with a diagnostic tool, such as the iid tool, which many of us have on here and well recommend, or the dealer will be able to do it. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Have a search for crankcase breather - there is loads of info, you can just do the element, or the whole unit. I just did the element as it's cheaper. Only have to fit it once, never change it again.

Have a read of this thread I did ages ago ;

Covers the upgrades that BMW did, but our cars never had.......
