Mercedes S-Class: Any Views on These?

As per the title. In particular, the S500.

Comments on any level accepted, but the more constructive the better my mood will be.

I have thought about getting the W221 model (2005-13) as they're starting to be quite cheap now, and also they do a 420 V8 diesel in euro-land which seems a bit of a beast when chipped (380bhp).

When I've been in one (inevitably a taxi) I've asked and the feedback is they're pretty bullet proof, with the 2008 onwards cars being immaculate.

I may get one, but it won't be this year, and I may by then change my mind.

Cracking cars though if you fancy a bit of wafting.

I'm thinking the S500 - 5.5V8 - as it's the only engine that excites me. I don't want a diesel.

The LWB version looks better (the standard model looks like it was shortened, rather than the LWB extended).

I like the simplicity of the looks, especially the interior. And the seats are truly superb. Way better than the FF's.

With the 5.5 V8, they're very much a wolf in sheep's clothing. I like that.

But I'm wary of the image compared to the FF. That's my problem right now. Si. <This is my name.

Ryan, that doesn't bother me.

I use a MB man to maintain my E55. It sees a main dealer, but I don't pay dealer prices or get a main dealer time restriction to fit parts.

There are good specialists around here, too. Bit like LR, to be fair.

Anyone care to comment on the S-Class image thing? I saw three today. All chauffeur driven. Confused Si. <This is my name.

What's wrong with the image?

To be honest, who gives a flying f**k? I couldn't care less what people think about the car I drive.

How about a CL500? (S class coupe) Getting very affordable now. This one is on AT at £17k.

Managing Director taxi. That's how I see the image.

Compare that to the FF as a largely classless, classy carriage and I feel a little put off.

But my perceptions may be wrong.

Personally, I love the S. The lines are great and I'm a huge MB fan.

Then again, I love the versatility of the FF. The 4wd, the luxury and the driving height. It's a car you can use every day, all year. Come the colder weather, I'd worry getting the S off the driveway.

I have two other Land Rovers, though. And because of the SC, I've largely ignored my 110 for a while now.

With some forward thought, the E55 and S could be parked out of yarns way. But the SC allows me not to worry.

It's a fragile argument I'm having with myself here. Would I miss the SC, so many members do in hindsight? Si. <This is my name.

CL500 has two drawbacks:

1. A friend of mine has just bought one. Don't particularly wish to follow suit.

2. Would prefer 4 doors for the children.

Other than that, they're lovely. Si. <This is my name.

@A1 - Didn't realise you could get one of those for that kind of money...

@ Bellini ...images and perceptions of obviously proper S class' ? Doctors and diplomats... Nice cars.

We did miss the RR during the just ended 7 week holiday it had at the dealership. Missed the high driving position, space, quality, performance and sad to say, sense of occasion offered when driving a nice RR. I was fine although non plussed about the courtesy XF but Mrs pld - for all her previous "get rid" rants about the SC - could not abide the XF and obviously missed the SC, which she's pleased to have back.

Suspect shorter term you'll like the saloon you buy but longer term you will hanker?

Thumbs Up

I personally think the S class is an awesome car and have always liked the idea of having one but due to horrendous back problems the SC just fits the bill and even if I had to part with the SC it would have to be a similar sort of car due to the back issues.

If you want the S Class you have to go for it Thumbs Up
