Ok, ok, quite true, but then again, only the Brits and Americans travel workdwide expecting local to speak English!

What would you say to a French, Spaniard or Greek visiting the UK if they'd speak to you in ther own language Whistle l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

Speaking a second language:-

I am English, can do a little French and little German - but what if i want to go to Spain / Italy / Belgium /Sweden / Denmark / Norway / Finland etc. etc. Whistle

On the other hand, if i'm European, I only need to learn ONE second language - English (as this is spoken by more people on the planet than any other language with the exception of Chinese) Whistle 2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)

Great humour, i really liked it.
But...if I go to Greece I try to speak some basic Greek, the same with Spanish, Italian and Indonesian. I take that as an obligation if you want to travel. It shows your respect for the people you are visiting. Neither the Britts, nor the French would make that effort. I see to many f Censored Britts talking very loud in their home language thinking the French are deaf and will understand English better if they shout. I would say it is a sign of disrespect and it is unpolight not to do this little step towards the other and try to speak a few words in their language. And by the way, according to the stats I just looked up Spanish is the worlds second language....

Do you know that London is the 5 th French city? 400000 French are living in London only, and speak English...

Having worked for a global company I can honestly say I can manage to speak German, French, a little Spanish and some Russian (although that is more the typing of written words than speaking fluently)

All very badly I hasten to add. But that video is exactly right and I thought it was actually poking fun at the English, or did I miss the point?

English normal = If Johnny Foreigner doesn't understand just speak more slowly and very LOUDLY Laughing

The French are just as bad though. I used to attend meetings in Paris, for a global account, which was English speaking for everything globally (US Head-quartered so what else Rolling Eyes ) and they would simply conduct the whole meeting in French unless there were Americans on the conference line. I was perfectly happy fro them to pay my flights, hotel, bar bill etc just so I could play Angry Birds the whole meeting Laughing

The new languages of the world (especially for business) .....my Prediction. Mandarin Chinese and English. Oh, and will someone please tell Microsoft that there is no such thing as "American English" Thumbs Up

Fully agree that when travelling, it is only polite to TRY and learn the basics - must say that in both france and germany, poeple have been impressed that a brit was actually making an attempt. Thumbs Up

Only trouble is, they usually want to practice their English - which is always far better than my french or german. Big Cry

Regarding telling Microsoft that there is no such thing a 'American English@, as Churchill said, we ( teh UK and America) are 2 countries seperated by a common language. Rolling with laughter 2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)
