Took my old classic, wife and two kids to the Picos de Europa several years ago. Overnight ferry to Santander then a couple of hours up in to the mountains. Stayed at the Refugio de Aliva - an old mountain hut converted in to a small hotel. Only accessible by 4x4. They run a Land Rover taxi service to the top of a nearby cable car. Great walks and great off roading. All tracks. On the way back stayed near the coast for a couple of nights before ferry back to Blighty.

Long time ago but a few points I remember: From Santander head for Fuente De but turn off before on to the track out of Espinama up to the Refugio de Aliva.
