Depreciation?

Now that my beautiful FF has been sold, thought I'd do a little (man) maths and total up how much it's cost throughout my ownership; Don't really want to go into initial purchase and subsequent sale prices but bare with me and you'll see where we get to.
Given that there is about £ 4000 difference between buying and selling and that I bought her in August 2010, have done 66,000 miles and sold her last week.
On a straight differential that's six pence per mile - 6ppm!
However, if you admit to yourself how much you've actually spent during the ownership, the figure obviously gets rather higher;
I worked on roughly £1000 per annum for its full service and MOT - there's been four during my ownership.
Gearbox refurbishment in November 2012, £2500.
Head gasket fault and subsequent top end overhaul £2500.
That's £9000. Add on the actual depreciation and that gives you £13200.
Divided by the mileage I did, and that gives the figure of 20ppm.
I haven't Included tyres as all vehicles need tyres, it's just that the FF needs large ones!
If you add into the mix road tax, again, most vehicles need road tax, four years worth - almost £1200, and that gives a grand total of 22ppm.
I don't think that's too bad is it?
Obviously the gearbox refurb and head gasket fault didn't help the cause, but that's FF ownership!!
Anyone else been through a similar exercise, or don't you want to know!!?? '17 RANGE ROVER L405 SDV8 AB LOIRE BLUE with INDUS SILVER ROOF

Is that the 5.0 SC you're talking about or your older 4.4 V8?

I'd be happy with that TBH, my Porsche cost 20p a mile in just maintenance let alone depreciation, tax, tyres etc.

Interesting.

As all UK cars seem to need an MOT, I'm not sure if that should be counted. Do you mean the cost of the test and tax, or all the repairs they mandated?

The RR seems to depreciate very quickly. If you don't buy new, hopefully you get the benefit on the purchase to offset the lower selling price.

The cost of the test is just a few pounds, but combined with the wearing parts that may be needed, together with the annual major service, I allowed for £1000 per year for all that 'wrapped up'.
you're right about depreciation from registering new vehicles - as soon as you put a number on any vehicle, it initially plummets, but then the depreciation does slow down, but only becomes an issue if you want to sell it on!!

Craig; just pottering around, of course you're right, the newer SC is more thirsty, but on a run, she's better than the old V8 - having a six speed gearbox helps that - at 70mph cruising, the SC is running at about 2000rpm, whereas the older V8 would run at about 2400 - 2500 rpm, depending on the weather (headwinds etc)

The maths work for me anyway! '17 RANGE ROVER L405 SDV8 AB LOIRE BLUE with INDUS SILVER ROOF

Very interesting, I have a mate who did this kind of thing to his mg metro and compared it to his Freelander 2 ! Im not going to even think how much I have spent on any of the fleet of Land Rovers we have over the years, If you did the man maths first before buying the FF, or any V8 come to think of it you wouldn't buy one! If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

If you own a FF, I think it's best not to know the running costs. There is a really handy feature on Piston Heads (go to the "My Garage" section) where you enter all the costs / details for servicing, maintenance, repair, purchase / selling price, fuel and it works out the PPM.

This is the result for my TD6 (which I kept for just over a year). As I said, it's really best not to know!

Oh and if you want "true" MPG use www.fuelly.com (and remember to set units to UK / Imperial)
Although I have to say, the FF computer MPG is quite close but it's just a guide. Fuelly gives you the eye watering truth.......... 2006 4.2 SC

Ah you see I work on the basis that what you paid for the car is spent- I always wait till I have the cash to buy - so anything you get back is free money so net result the FF is cheap as chips
