although advertised as 4.4 v8 it is actually a 4.2 supercharged with +-90400 (56 650miles), black interior, silver in colour.

things picked up are few small scratches on right rear door and rear bumper; spare tyre cut on sidewall, and thats it. the scratches on the bumper seems that it could be easily polished out; however the ones on the rear door seems to be deeper and thus more difficult to remove. Dealer said that they would ensure that the scratches are out before delivery.

btw car is at a main LR dealer which is part of a large dealer network here in south africa

looks tidy and its got all the bits in the right places...i gather you'd get a pretty good warranty with it? ... - .- -.

still have to discuss the details about the warranty, etc.

however i bought warranties privately and direct from the same warranty company that LR dealers in SA used. submitted claims before with the same company for the land rover and range rover, which were paid without any questions asked. cover on engine for example is R70k (GBP4.5k) - requirements are that services be done through RMI accredited workshops, including indies.

deal will now depend on how much they will give me for my 2004 ffrr v8 - if their offer is right then we will take it

£16800 GBP with 56k miles would be a very good price here in the UK

i test drove the car and found that there is some vibration at between 67 and 85 mph - still waiting on salesman to get back to me with reasons why this happens.

also when i reviewed the invoices i discovered that at the last service the previous owner complained about the engine management light (EML) that was on. i spoke to the previous owner who said that it happened on a few occasions that the EML came on, but when the dealer put it on their diagnostic machine it didn't throw any fault codes - the workshop would reset the EML and it would be good for some time. Apparently the explanation given to him was "because he only do short distances - 10kms - per day with the car". according to the previous owner there were no problems with the performance even when the EML was on. He also said that on one occasion the EML was on, but when he did some long distance (60miles), the EML went out.

Any ideas what could cause this to happen - I was thinking possibly cats that are partially blocked.

the dealer offers me GBP5289 for my 2004 Range Rover 4.4 v8 - my car smokes when starting it - according to the indie who normally works on the car the engine must be reconditioned as the oil rings are gone- and the steering column (up and down) doesn't work.

do you think that is a fair offer or not?

The EML goes on, in essence to tell you there is a fault. Therefore there must be a code for that fault! Simples... Don't let the dealer tell you otherwise

Vibration could mean many things from an out of balance wheel to a major component failing! And a guess at this point would be just that! And no real help to you sir... Better get that looked at by a professional

The way the EMl works is as follows:-

On the first drive cycle, if a fault is picked up, a code is stored in the 'codes pending' area of the ECU. If, on the next drive cycle the same fault occurs, the code is put in to the 'active codes' area, and the MWL ('malfunction warning light') will illuminate. This will now stay on until the fault is cleared using a code reader.

However, if a further 3 drive cyles are completed WITHOUT the same fault being raised, the MWL will be turned off. If 40 drive cycles are completed without the same fault code being raised, then the code will be erased from memory. (One 'drive cycle' is from ignition being turned 'on' to it being turned 'off', regardless of distance travelled, run time of engine etc.)

When I got my FF (2006 4.4 AJV8), I kept getting the MWL on, with fault code 'p0170, fuel trim bank 1' errors. This was investigated by the selling dealer, who replaced a Lambda sensor, but this didn't cure the problem. I did some research, if you google 'p0170 fault code on Range rover' on range rovers .net (I think) there was a land rover technical bulletin about this issue, I think it also applied to 2006/7 4.2 supercharged vehicles (a range of VIN no's is given in the bulletin).

To cut a long story short (I am going to post the full tale on here when I have time), a number of different fault codes could be raised on these vehicles, and it was due to 'over sensitive ECU calibration'. The solution was the downloading of a later ECU map to the engine ECU.

So, I took my FF to Listers in Hereford (a main dealer). After some trouble (again see the full story when I post it), they managed to load the later ECU map on to the vehicle, and I have had no trouble with it since (done over 2000 miles now since it was fixed).

So although the MWL will only come on when there is a fault, this fault could be only a short term issue (in my case, apparently the earlier ECU map turned the Lambda sensor heaters off too soon, which resulted in a short term spurious imbalance in the Lambda reading, enough to raise the error code and illuminate the MWL, although the engine was actually running fine). Thats not to say that you don't have a different issue, you would need to see what code was being raised when the MWL comes on, but it might be worth looking to see if this issue is what is causing your problem.

Regarding the vibration at speed, as Craig has said, you need expert advice as this could be V expensive!!

@fullfatray - the previous owner stated that he only did about 6 miles per day with the car that could possibly have resulted in the vehicle not properly warmed up - however i have asked the dealer to provide me with a full report on this.

regarding the vibration at speed - I've again checked the last invoice dated 17 January 2014. according to this invoice the previous owner complained that the left rear wheel was binding - the LR workshop replaced the left rear wheel bearing, front and rear brake pads and also had the wheel balancing done.

i must say it looks like the previous owner did not spare any cost on the car - all services were done by the dealer where the car is currently on sale. the last invoice (17 Jan 2014) shows that work to the value of R20,120 was done (120 000km service done on 90139kms, brake pads front and rear, left rear wheel bearing, wheel alignment). the owner even booked the car in with LR workshop to have the tyres replaced.

the car has full land rover service history thus I'm quite keen on buying it; however its just the vibration and the EML warning light that is worrying me - hopefully the dealer will be able to provide clarity on the issues.

otherwise i will just have to keep looking

I've decided to take the car - dealer still has to do 144 check, remove scratches, etc. They've put in writing that the engine light is apparently due to the same reason Full Fat Ray's came on - software needs to be updated which will be done during the 144 check. Btw the light is not on at the moment and was also not on during my test drive - i picked it up from the invoice for the last service done by the LR dealer.

They also put in writing that they will sort out the vibration if wheel balancing and alignment does not cure it.

I can hopefully pick it up today, latest tomorrow.

collected her today - what can i say - 80kW and 120Nm more - and one can feel it. much more effortless than the 2004 FFRR which already was not necessary a slouch - but boy oh boy can this silver bullet run.

collection process was such a pleasure - salesman explained a number of things, did physical inspection of car, did an interview with sales manager who recorded the issues that still needs to be sorted out. Those are things that they would have sorted before delivery, but because I was in such a hurry to get her, they made an official list of all the items - both the sales manager and I signed the document. These issues will be sorted out when im back in a week's time
