Gas smell-help

Hi All

Just traded my 911 for a late 57 plate tdv8 vogue and i love it !!
Can't understand how i resisted for so long
Enjoyed the 400 mile run back to scotland and the car is in great condition
with 19k on the clock
Noticed on the way up a smell of gas -sometimes quite strong
most noticable with sunroof open
car is still under warranty but wanted some expert insider advice before i
take it to the local "stealers"
any help appreciated

Gas? Do you mean diesel??

What mpg did you get on the way back? Does the engine bay look clean? The fuel system in this car is under v high pressure and you'd need to look at the lines for signs of a leak.

If by 'gas' you meant, erm gas. Then its probably not your car. Whistle Laughing

That's just England for you.......... There's so many of them down there and in some areas they still throw their waste out of the windows to the streets below. Whistle Laughing

It'll be fine once your back amongst the granite. Wink

Mind you, it may be some time before you get a chance to open the sunroof in Scotland...... Big Cry The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

I just had similar on the new 300c. It turned out to be a leaking high pressure diesel fuel hose that was only about 6 inches long and positioned between the two cylinder blocks on top of the fuel seperator and under the plastic engine cover. It had a very small pin prick style hole in it! It leaked again after replacement by a Chrysler Assistance mobile unit as the jubilee was not tight enough and the fuel is under very high pressure Exclamation

I fixed it myself with the aid of a trusty screwdriver Thumbs Up

Hi Guys

Thanks for replying -Def not human-and not diesel-although never had experience
of a big V8-just a very strong sort of "egg" smell- can't be right for a 70k vehicle
and hoped that it was just a common fault -but clearly not
car has been main dealer serviced and still has warranty

as for mpg on the way up-didn't hang about and averaged 32ish
engine bay looks clean smell seems to be coming from the rear
but not a diesel smell as i know it at the pump

thought the Granite might help but doomed with T&C as main dealer....!!!

Question

I thought 'egg' smells that come from vehicles were because of stale catalytic converters (or petrol cars, that were running on low grade fuel sold by supermarket chains)

Had it not been driven for a while before you collected it?

Is it still continuing to stink, or did it only occur on that one occasion?
(sure it wasn't coming from a car you were following?)

I haven't noticed any nasty smells from my TDV8 that I can remember Neutral

Oh! - Welcome to the gang by the way Thumbs Up

Greenbank 4x4 in Tullos or Mann Automotive in Laurencekirk! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I had my TDV8 get it's first (15k) service at Mann Automotive and I was £210 inc VAT. Also had the blessing of the supplying main dealer who was too far away for me to get to at the time. Like you, I prefer to cross the border than deal with T&C. Lakeland LR in the Lakes have supplied my last two motors and I wouldn't look anywhere else for a new one.

Back to your 'issue', I'd guess that you were simply smelling the catalyst from another car. Not uncommon these days. Rolling Eyes The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

Hi Guys

Car probably sitting for a wee while before i picked it up
prob hadn't done much for 6 weeks
smell still there and still the same
waited till i'd driven to work to reply just to check i'm not going mad
its a strong -(far too strong to be acceptable) gassy smell in the cab
Got out at work to find smell stronger in cab than outside vehicle-and no I didn't have a curry
last night

Maybe some leakage of "something into the cab"-really pleased My RR has a rare disease

Thanks JMC for the "local Knowledge"-I had a bad enough time with T&C with my Porker
and hear that next door they have the ultimate in the anti service department
