02 to 05 radio change to after market touch screen

heres a video of the changing you standard radio to a new singing and dancing unit.

looks quite good but make your own mind up..

What's that unit from? Or is it a custom made replacement?

I wonder if it will interface with the Logic7 amp? Seems like an awesome upgrade if you have an HSE!

You can find this unit on many websites, but the problem is all the dashboard computer informaiton are not supported with this unit.

the old display can be permanently fitted into the glove box .. ... - .- -.

Ok but odd that he fitted it with the connecting cable coming up in the middle of the dash!

Because he only uses and connects the old display to set the clock

spoke with the guy how is doing these and there may be an interface that can be used, all you will have to do is select av2 and that will connected to the factory video supply, it will show then display all the what was shown on the old display...the prob is the buttons that was on the old unit, these are now lost and are needed to control the operation of the factory system via the ibus. Exactly - it's not just the clock. You'll still need the MID. In theory it should actually be quite easy to program a working interface. These units usually run on winCE and the various ibus compatible front-ends such as CarX (which daveo has installed) or Carmedia already interface with the vehicles controls and run under windows.

The unit he's using, tho, is from an E53 (X5) I believe, and has a curved face. At the end of the video there is a very short shot with the dash cover back in place and you can see the lower edge of the unit resting on the lower dash pad instead of behind it. And it doesn't close to the wood trim on either side. You could make covers for those opening, of course, but it will never look good. And he's also mounted the GPS mouse on the dash - there are better alternatives, albeit with a bit more work. PowerfulUK has some good products and some good how-to vids. As far as I'm concerned this is not one of them.

There is a unit made for the E39 (5series) that should fit perfectly.

All you need to do is paint the faceplate foundry silver and you're done.

From all I've read on these most customers still aren't really that impressed. Still seems to be Chinese junk. Def very interesting, tho.

EDIT: I should add that I researched all of this over a year ago before gathering the parts to retrofit the oem navigation. Chinese products improve very rapidly and I'm sure there'll be a good version of this out sometime - or maybe these are already ok. Although they still have these artsy features like the pic of a '72 Chevrolet Impala convertible when you start the nav (at about 30 secs into the vid).
