TIMING CHAIN COST?

hi all.has anyone had the timing chains replaced and maybe the guides etc on a v8 4.4 ffrr before?recently started getting a rattle noise that i have a horrible feeling could be the dreaded timing chains.indy listened to it and guessed this was the cause of the noise.asked for a ball-park figure and was told the last one they done needed guides and/or shoes.came to £3500.i know it`s a big job involving engine removal and dismantling part of the engine but £3500?sound right to anyone?
any advice much appreciated.also ,if i leave it i assume it will only get worse, then go bang 05`V8 AUTOBIOGRAPHY

If it's the BMW engine it's more likely to be the VANOS rattling - especially if it goes away imediately after start up. Mines been doing that for nearly 100,000 miles now. Still seems OK.

I was quoted about the same to do mine by my Indy

Mine needed done at 160k and I reckoned it more cost effective to get hold of a lower mileage 2nd hand engine, do the chain/guides etc and pop that in.

If my old engine had say less than 100k on it, I prob would have repaired it. 2002 Vogue 4.4 V8

thanks guys.rattle does not dissappear after warming up.if it was just the rattle i could suffer it because its not that loud,my worry is `if` it is the chains and i leave it,what eventually happens?
also its an expensive job to do based on `it could be the timing chains.`maybe £3500 later and still got the noise.maybe get another indy to listen to it and see what they think 05`V8 AUTOBIOGRAPHY
