Well for those of you who fancy an Escort, this is THE definitive one. For sale at a mere 45 grand.

It was the original fast Ford being the RS1600, sporting the Belt-Driven A series Cosworth and thus known as the BDA, it was one of the rarer Escorts but for me probably one of only 3 I'd want. The other 2 would be the Escort "Twin-Cam" which was basically the same but had the Lotus twin cam engine as fitted to Lotus Cortina, or I might plump for a Mark 2 RS1800 which was the successor to this Mark 1. All the other escorts were a poor imitation unless you can find one of the original works Mexico's of course.

BTW, the yellow one in the background is a "Twin-Cam" I believe. I think it might even be one of the 1970's works cars but I'm not 100% sure.

mzplcg, genuine question, have you driven one of these cars recently. reason is I have a soft spot for the MK1 Golf Gti, the 1600 original as I had one when I was 18 and loved it, drove one about a year ago and was sorely disappointed, 30 years have changed me and my aspirations, main thing was how did we fit in the bloody things and I haven't put on any weight, must be getting old Very Happy Thumbs Up

I sure have Rosco. The main thing I found was it wasn't half as quick as I remember. A full on 130BHP no less, with a Four-on-the-floor box, no PAS, no interia reel belts, no head rests, jeez no nothing.

Nippy and torquey but not exactly fast, especially after driving an F-Type Jag Laughing

Oh, and really shocking brakes too. Shocked (no servo) To quote my dear German friend, "Verdammt, ich kacken mich"

BUT...........the sound, Dear Lord, the sound of that BDA on full chatt. Intoxicating and I really (REALLY) want one.

Dom

You really should. Remember these were a lot more hand assembled than modern machinery is and the tooling wasn't up to modern fit and finish standards.

Go drive an E-Type. Sexy to look at, arguably the most beautiful car in the world. Fast, powerful, sporty with real handling, not electronic aids type handling...........and then listen to the squeaks and rattles Laughing Take a long stare ar the keep-fit window winders, relax in the heat of summer with no air-con and remember what having no synchromesh on 1st and 2nd gear was all about. Honestly, who these days knows how to double de-clutch?

Those old cars are what they are, but look past the shortcomings and remember the days when we drove the things, properly, and when we got it wrong there was no ABS/TC/ASR to bail us out. Crikey, my first car was shod with crossplies, it had a live rear axle and a more scary experience in the wet you won't find. But is was somehow more real, at least for me it was. it too more skill to drive those cars fast than it does a Focus RS.

Even supercars are not immune to being ruined with modern disease. I still maintain the last real Ferrari was the 355. Proper gearbox, a clutch, and the last one which could be driven like a Kart. Try that in a 430 and it's all a bit remote feeling with too much electronic interference.

OMG The chity chity bang bang... I sat beside my father when he drove one of those, there were four I think, at the Ford factory in Holland, must have a picture somewhere. Brings back memories. Sad The E type wasn't that difficult, I sold my 3.8 fhc 1964 last year, and she was a dream to drive, at the right rpm you did not even had to double clutch, just lift your foot from the throttle and slip her back. The moss box was a sweet one, if you knew how to handle her. The series 2 box was fully synchro, so no problem at all.
Yes my Aston DB7 is faster, but not half the fun to drive. If you talk about dreamcars it means to me that you still can feel what the car is doing and where the road is going. That you can feel the white stripes under your wheels. Driving my
Pre wars I have the feeling and excitement of driving 120 miles an hour while she is only doing 70 and I don't know what you guys are thinking, but I still hate safety belts
But I give in...from here to Bordeaux feels like a Dakar day and is a shoppingtrip in the FFRR

Lamborghini Espada!

Used to have a poster of this car on my bedroom wall, I think it was a poster for Pirelli Cinturato tyres.

A properly set up Mk1 BDA like this one below will get about 250 BHP today, you can get 130BHP from a 1600 Kent on twin 40s.

Mind you, the rebuild cost is about £100,000, but look at what you get!

Sort of a forgotton car, but one I've always admired - the Jaguar XJ-C.

Not sure I'd be brave enough to own one though, just a shame Jaguar didn't maintain the line in the way that Mercedes did with the S-Class.

Here's a Finnish guy who completely rebuilt one with the later 6 litre V12 and 4sp box, ending up with this: -

^ Fantastic choice, Kurt. I really like those. But yes, I don't think I'm brave enough to get one. Big Cry
