Tapping Noise

My 4.2 SC engine has developed a loud tapping noise which sounds similar to a hydraulic lifter bleeding down, these jaguar engines however have solid shimmed tappets so it rules out that idea. The noise is worse when the engine is cold and not always audiable at all. When the engine is hot it is not as loud and is intermitant. Oil level is ok and recently changed. The noise appears to be coming from the LH cam cover. Mileage 78k.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Stewart.

I would guess a worn cam lobe, possibly being caused by a blocked oil way which improves when the oil is thinner whilst warm & able to get through. Would get the cover off check for wear & clear the oil feed pipes out. You could try a flush but best way is clean the oil feed first then flush to remove any other deposits Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Worse things happen at sea! Well thats what swmbo said when WRENS came to sea!!!

Could be one of the drive belts fraying at the edges! Previous cars:
S-Max 2007-2013 (only diesel I've had, good car but expensive when diesely bits go wrong, so what's the point?)
