Ok so my FBH has never worked since purchase 12 months ago and today I decided to tackle it.

Always shows the fault - Glow plug / flame detector short to ground.

Took the thing out today and stripped it down and found lots of carbon in the flame chamber especially around the glow plug - ECU looks PERFECT - no sign of water damage or burning

The glow plug cables look slightly brown

Measured the glow plug resistance and got 0.4 ohms (correct range according to service manual)

Cleaned all the crap out of the flame chamber and tried again but got the same fault.

Logically I'd say the glow plug is breaking down under load maybe but 1 niggling little issue is bothering me - I've yet to hear the fuel pump work - maybe this is faulty but I've got a feeling its going into lockout before it calls for fuel - here is my sequence.

System activates - fan operates to 100% for 3-4 seconds then stops for 1-2 seconds

Fan then starts back up at 100% and runs for approx 60 seconds (I think this maybe standard response to a fault to cool the system down before shutdown)

According to the manual the system should start, fans run 100%, glow plug glows, fans stop, fuel injection, fans slowly ramp up to 100% after flame detection.

Can anyone answer me the following question

When you start your FBH does your sequence sound like mine? .... Fans 100% for 2-3 sec, stop for 2-3 sec, back on 100% - OR is it more like the other situation Fans 100% for 2-3 sec, stop for 2-3 sec then slowly ramp up?

Basically I'm at the stage when I'm about to buy a new burner cartridge & glow plug, ECU looks good, not sure on pump but as I said I dont think its being called.

Any comments gratefully received.

Well just purchased a new burner kit (bugg3rs wouldn't sell me a glow plug on its own) .... Hope this works

Gotta fix the mounting bolts for the exhaust at the same time tho - they broke off when I removed it.

Would be interested in your outcome on this as i have the same fault code,you also saved me a job this weekend as what you have done was my plan for saturday morning

yours may be fixable with just a clean .... I was hoping mine would run after as there was alot of crud around the plug but sadly no.

Well just tried new burner cartridge and getting same fault - suspect ECU must be .

I've seen a write up somewhere (maybe the MG Rover forum) about the coolant fan going on and off, and what it tells you about what's up with it.
