Hi Steve,
Still waiting for your reply: does the FBH run as an auxiliary heater? Alternatively have Craig check for codes and use the Service/Test functions on the IIDTool to manually start the FBH. If you have a prob with the heater itself, it will not fire...

Cheers,

Hi Steve I did email you some pics on Tuesday like you asked. I've just tried to run it but turned off after about a minute. I've only got 40 miles fuel at the moment. What should if sound like ? Mine just sounds like the fan is running. I was imagining something like a mini engine firing up ???

Update. When I manually put the aux heat on it goes off after about a minute.

Not right. Should keep running.

Locate the exhaust port under the passenger side footwell and see if the vented fumes are hot or cold There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi Steve,
Sorry - like I said I have the BMW menu and am too used to that an the terminology is better.

The FBH has 2 basic modes of operation: as an automatic auxiliary heater when the car is started at cold temps, and as a park heater if you have that function activated. While it is called "Aux Heat" in the silly, non-intuitive LR version of the menu, it is simply the park heat function running in "Direct Mode". Real auxiliary heat is automatic.

When you start the car at cold temps (under 5°C) and leave it running for a minute or so, if you switch the motor off you should hear a small jet engine under your bonnet. Do not run the motor too short as the start sequence for the FBH takes around a full minute (+). and do not run the engine too long as the FBH shuts off when the engine reaches operating temp. It is just there to help the engine heat the cabin more quickly at cold temps as the diesels put out too little waste heat (which is why all diesels have an FBH ex-factory and the petrol models don't).

When you shut the engine off, the FBH goes into shut down sequence which takes around another minute or so (the glow plug is heated again to burn of any soot and the combustion air fan runs all the while).

If your FBH runs as an automatic aux heater, you have a prob in the bus system / initialization sequence. If it doesn't, your FBH needs service.

Cheers,

Thank for the reply Steve Thumbs Up
Would it have anything to do with the amplifier ? It's been playing up now and again with the sound from the radio, and like interference when I put the key in the ignition.....!!

I assume you are not hearing the sound of a burn starting either. All you're hearing is the combustion air blower during a failed start sequence - so it seems you have an FBH prob. You'll need to go back to Craig and have the codes read.
