Front suspension leak.

Hello all

2 Years ago my front drivers side air bag sprang a leak,it was simple to diagnose as it was loudly hissing from wheel arch. So trip to an indie and job done.

Yesterday i noticed my range seemed to be struggling with front height adjustment. on examination i can hear a calm hissing coming from under the battery tray, passenger side. So my question is that although it does not seem to be coming from the strut, is there air pipes running under the battery,or is it just making me look more stupid then i actually am.!!

Even when i lift suspension to off rd height ,i cant hear it coming from the air bag,so do i just bite the bullet and order a new one from Dan.

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers Piers

AFAIK the only air pipe on that side is the one that goes to the air bag.

To get at the pipe you will need to drop the inner wheel arch and follow the pipe back from the airbag. Could have developed a split somewhere?

Just in case it is the airbag:

Does it still hiss at access height?
Also try the soapy water test at off road height. .

If its the air line it could be repaired with a couple of connectors and a piece of pipe.

Much cheaper than a new strut. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks

whatever the height it only hisses, and can be heard from behind the vent on the front wing. I have read the wiki on strut removal which doesnt look that daunting.
I will remove plastic wing lining and go from there. Fingers crossed. Thumbs Up

Today i removed inner wing and hey presto the air pipe had been touching the fbh . Last week i did a system check and ran the fbh for a couple of minutes, resulting in a melted pin prick in the air line. Its in such an awkward place that fitting a compression joint is a no no,so its going to be a case of cobble an air tight seal.

Still its cheaper then an air bag. Thumbs Up

You can get push fit fittings for the airlines, which simply press on. So as long as you can cut it and get your hands to it you should be able to effect a repair.

Have a search around i seem to remember someone repairing a split line on here somewhere.

Just be careful when you do it, make sure you have the weight of the car on axle stands all round before you cut the pipe Thumbs Up .

In fact, disconnect the battery before you start and wait a while, and make sure you have a way of disabling/reenabling the air suspension when you are done, otherwise you are likely to be down in the dumps with no lights on the dash and a bong! .

Thanks guys for your imput.and a big thanks to Northern MonkeyJ For giving me the headsup on the push fittings. They arrived this morning and was such an easy fix. All is good alas if only my battery drain could be resolved as easily.

I must be a real glutton for punishment as i am now considering upgrading to a 2008. If you are ever walking through Henley and you see a guy with Censored tattooed on his forehead pls stop and say hello to me. Thumbs Up

Cheers Piers
