Hi all

I have started to get a strange whirring noise when I reach 55mph and up which sounds like a tyre over infated on new tarmac or even a feint worn wheel bearing drone, its only just started and I've tried changing up and down the gears to see if it was gearbox related but the noise doesn't change with icreased revs etc.

Could it be a wheel bearing or worse still drive shaft related?

Tyres are Michelin and have done 3k miles max.

Its an 07 MY TDV8 with 59k miles.

Anyone experience this?

If you steer from side to side, swinging the car, or cornering, does the noise change as the weight of the car is transferred from side to side? Previously..

Can't say for certain until I'm out tomorrow but from memory today I don't recall it changing tone. Its silent to 55 then comes in and is a constant noise from outside the car until I drop below that sort of speed again.

My steering feels a tad lighter, that's probably the only difference in feel.

Could it be wind noise of some sorts? Any loose trim on the bodywork? Previously..

I've had similar before and it was a loose scuttle tray.

I've got the same now but it feels and sounds like the wheel bearing is near the end of its life on my passenger side  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Well it had a new altenator at the local LR dealers last Friday, plenty of parts to remove and the noise is evident now

The cornering at speed with the radio off will give it away if its a bearing fault.

If its driveshaft the noise will stay i believe... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

The noise didn't change when cornering, that said I didn't do much cornering on the m/way.

Wouldn't a driveshaft probem be all the time rather than when I get to a certain speed?

I had a bearing problem on a Mercedes a few years ago which was more obvious, I'd go as far as to say this is more like having the tyre pressures too high on certain smooth roads.

Did you get to the bottom of this? I have a drone, possibly a bearing on the front but I can't feel anything when I rock the wheels ... Although they are that heavy, maybe hard to tell.

I've got the same or similar whine. It sounds to me like a bearing. Difficult to track down as it is only heard from 30mph plus and then over 70 can't hear it for wind/tyre noise. It is a very stable, high pitched, low volume, whine. Not affected by steering as far as I can tell and not affected by gears. Perhaps rear diff? 2012 5.0L S/C

I have the same type of noise on a specific bit of road, it sounds like a resonance typical for tyre noise. This bit of road is bricks not bitumen. It is only the one bit, the rest of the same road no issue. Will keep an eye on what speed it is at next time. I think it is just a freaky but rare combination of the resonance frequency of the tyre "blocks" and the way the bricks are laid on that bit of road.

Bearing noises usually start to show up with cornering and get worse (I still have a bearing type noise when cornering and it is still there after all 4 wheel bearings were replaced, so a bit stumped there, also most of the wheel arm bushings have been replaced).

Maybe a bit far fetched but the diffs ??? May be worth having the diff oil changed. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Also had this, it was the washer spray & elect cable resonating against the scuttle in front of the battery. I also get a bad hum on certain roads from the tyres but mine are Genersl AT so its expected
