Tailgate Seal Replacement

Today I received a new tailgate seal in the post from Dan (thanks Dan - great service as usual !) - part no. LR024161.
Quite surprised, however, that the seal is effectively in one piece. I was expecting it to be one length with some surplus to trim.
The fact it's one piece puts a bit of pressure on for a perfect fit !
Has anyone done this DIY and if so, any tips ? - I'm thinking rubber mallet may be the way forward.

Just for info, I'm replacing it as there is obvious metal corrosion in the seal in various places.

In all seriousness, I'd be interested in the experience of others on this one. Perhaps an application of Vaseline (to the seal . . . ahem) may help with fitting ?

I fitted mine easily enough.
No lubricants need to fit the grove in the new seal, it actually has a mastic insert in the grove that goes over the metal flange.
Any lubricant will mean the mastic will not stick to the metal flange.
Easiest to start the seal at the top centre ie with the glued joint on the seal to the bottom.
I measured the seal each way from the glued joint to get the position of the centre top of the seal and marked it with a piece of tape.
Start from the centre top working each way stopping just short of the top corners.
Once positioned tap the seal fully home using a plastic mallet or similar.
Take your time on the top corners they are really fiddly as you have to bend the seal round the corners and press into place without distorting the outer part of the seal as it goes round the flange.
If you are not careful the outer flange of the seal splays outwards and therefore doesn't grip the metal flange.
It's really important to get the top corners right otherwise they will leak water into the boot.
Once you have the top corners on place the sides are easy, the bottom corners are not as fiddly as the top, I seem to remember the radius is greater.
Again the bottom is easy, if you have done everything correctly it should just push on with no excess bulge.
Once the seal is in place all round use the mallet again to tap it fully home all round.

Hah I had a complete mare with mine. But I have little patience with fiddly things.
All the ^^ advice is great. Take your time and choose a nice day for it as it's just a little cumbersome, maybe get a second pair of hands to hold the seal you haven't fitted yet.

Well, after a fine day yesterday (finally), I got round to replacing the tailgate seal.
Removing the existing seal revealed it was shot at in more than one place - mainly at the OS top corner.
Easy job with a bit of time and patience, and an opportunity to properly clean around the tailgate opening with old seal off.
After this, I applied a little Vaseline either side of the body join to ease the new seal on which worked a treat.
The new seal was a perfect fit with no slack to take up.
Now looking forward to a dry and condensation free boot . . .
