There are two types of tow bar, but there is also a LR bike rack that slots directly into the square hole:

Looking at the removable one, when it is removed, there is still quite a chunk of metal visible below the bumper? Is there a big difference in quality between a genuine LR one and a decent brand such as Brink or similar? |

Sorry to hijack your thread hughjayteens dan_uk_1984 you are a star I have been trying to work out what pieces of the towbar I have currently installed on my car from the previous owner - and what bits I need I think Do you know if the cross member (Part no 17D826A ) is available from LR on its own with out the chassis arms?(I assume the two different styles shown for the chassis are for different rear bumper types) I already have both parts that attach to the chassis (Part no's 17D826B & 17D826C) - Is this standard equipment on a 2008 TDV8 or does it mean it used to have a tow bar fitted at some time? Only want a tow bar to fit a substanial bike rack (not for towing trailers etc.) Any idea's |

You could always stick 1 of these into the square hole left:

Yes, part number 17D826A is available as seperate part - but it's age specific to accommodate the differing exhaust mounts. (Essentially either a BMW engine or Jag era) The other two parts (17D826B and 17D826C) are fitted as standard but are binned when you fit the towbar armature. I use the 19D520B hitch and have fitted a demountable rack which sandwiches onto the two towball bolts like this one: Not sure you should be reading this bit. |

Bear in mind that 17D826x aren't the part numbers, they are the picture numbers on the parts catalogue.

Noddy - can you open the tailgate OK when it is in the tilted position? A 3 bike version of that is what I had in mind. |

I have the same thule bike carrier and it fits well and does allow me to open the lower tailgate when tilted. It is a little tight however so make sure you have it mounted square on the towball.
