i have fixed all the problems i got with my FF purchase, however, my 2002 FF has an annoying intermittant squeal when i open the door, (not every time) and it stays on for ages, even after driving and playing with all heater knobs etc. i was aware the tiny vent hole on the front panel is a likely culprit, and have removed this panel, dismatled,, cleaned up and replaced. but with many a person invited to listen, we all agree its from the drivers footwell. i guess there is another of these sensor fans somewhere else, and when i find it i shall address it, but does anyone know where to look???. it sounds like the old tv 'no signal' high pitch weeeeeeeeeeeeeee noise. no grumbling, no gaps, just constant. i took off the console side panels, and have banged the actual heater box trying to locate it. -and it ALWAYS happens when someone gets in and says 'wow this is nice', -whats that noise though?

If you remove the horizontal panel above the foot pedals you will find an electronic sounder that gives out the "boings". I would try unplugging the sounder to eliminate it as the cause of the sound you hear.

Check the e-box fan, located in the depths of the e-box on the LHS of the engine compartment. It keeps all the electronics cool during high temperatures.

When the bearings go, it sounds like the noise is from the footwell. Somewhere on here there is a photo guide to how to replace it, it's not hard, just a little fiddly.

well, after advice from this posting, i heard the fan squeal again, and thinking it WASNS'T the under bonnet brain box, i hunted and hunted for that noise. eventually i opened the bonnet, and thumped the ecu brain-box, and hey presto, it stopped! later that week, i read up on changing it out. but seeing that it costs around £200 i thought i would try something DIY. i got it out and all it is, is a small 12v motor, a quitesmall squirrel cage fan, and a small printed circuit board. -around £20 worth at that. i removed the guts, and after prising off the cage fan, and pulling motor, i felt that it seemed not to spin, (in my fingers, -but it turned, like it was running dry so i wd40 the bearings, lightly, and immediately it seemed to spin, (in my fingers) so, i put in a small drop each end of 3in1 oil. i spun it a few times, and it semed better. reasembeled and it seems to be fine now. it used to squeal every few days, and its been good now for a week, but i will report back if still happens.
To remove the fan, you only need allen key and posidrive screwdriver, and some bluetack to pick up te screws you drop into the box etc. the noise permiates to the under dash area because the air is drawn to the brain box, FROM the footwell, via bulkhead hole behind brake pedal.
i noticed that the motor had 'johnson' stamped to it. this is a popular model motor etc, and a quick ebay search for 12v johnson motor shows a very similar one, that i cant confirm is identical right now, for just £2.99! this is where i will be if it continues.

Could this be the notorious battery drain fan???

so if we ensure this fan will only work while the car is running, could we then eliminate dead batteries?

Could somebody look into this, or has this already been done, and can we safely put this aside as not being the culprit.

when my car made the noise, it would do it as i opened the door, and i would hear nothing for about 1-2 seconds then the squeal, so it wasnt doing it while 'asleep' at least i assume so. -also, whilst this has been going on, i have not had any battery isues. though i did whack in a new bosch 5 year supersize, after about one month of ownership, as i have come from p38 ownership, and this seems the only way to know you have a proper battery to start with.

-when i got my l322 it had a newish bosch 5 year silver supersize, identical to the 'new battery' and only a year or so into its garuantee etc, but it would lose its charge over a week or two, and be flat! somewhere in its previous history, it has suffered a long discharge cycle, and rendered itself, 'below par' so, knowing that a fresh battery, with a new receipt etc, from europarts etc, i can trust it to work ok, i am flying high with the battery. i took the old one back to those comedians that sell push bikes, and air fresheners, and told them (the old) battery is crap, (with receipt) and they charged it, and kept it in for a week and tested it and said its fine. i told them it clearly wasn't, and took it home with me, knowing its just a gate holding open device. i'm leaving it for another year, till its mullered, then getting the missus to take it back, -no-one gets the better of her!
