Yes I saw that. They've already invaded the on board computers. Justifies being vigilant! Smile

The French reaction on that Swiss training was 'we want our black money back from the Swiss banks
So they better train a little more.'

Maybe lower the taxation in France and then people would not hide their black money so much. Smile

The tax is bad here as well. I sometimes have to pay as much as 10% to 12%. What are you guys paying?

I've found something interesting in the settings menu.

If I turn off the camera alerts, it then turns the OBC to French. However, I then get a menu for language. If I set that to GB, it turns on the camera Alerts. If I then go back into the menu, the language option disappears!

At least I know now.

The explanation of all this language and speed camera alert stuff is quite simple.

The OEM system does not support alerts for Points Of Interest, in this case Speed Cameras, but someone found that the base software provided by VDO does have this feature. They hacked the OEM software to provide the feature, however once enabled the only way to turn it off is to disable instructions which can only be done when route guidance is active (you know you can click and hold on the 'Instruction' option to turn of audio prompts, right?).

So, another hack was done which involves changing the Nav languages, one language has an audio alert, 'ping pong', or whatever, the other languages have a short silent alert. The effect, changing the language turns off the alert.

But the problem is that the Nav computer only supports 3 languages out of a possible 7 (a few more if you count dialects), if the first is English, the second is usually French. So, switching languages set the car into French.

The problem here is that the people that sell or provide this hacked Nav software appear to only know half the story, or don't know anything because they just rip off other peoples work and sell it. The key is that when you install this hack you also have to recode the languages that the Nav supports. The usual coding is UK and US English which results in a relatively seamless change.

However, be warned, the POI Audio hack is quite unstable when used with TMC. Some TMC messages will cause the Nav to reboot if the hack is installed, this will result in a rapid reboot cycle which will eventually crash the Nav. The audio alerts are also very annoying. Your best bet is to reinstall the original software, maybe with just a splash screen change but without the POI hack.
