[SOLVED] "Coolant Level Low" - NOT!

I am losing a bit of coolant, @ 1/2 litre every 500 miles (believe slight leak in radiator).

However, message comes on when coolant level is NOT low, but only when engine is running consistently @ 3k RPM under load, so you guys will know what that means if I am in top gear !

Is coolant level measured by something other than actual coolant level, e.g. pressure/flow to cause this ? .

As far as I know it measures SG of the coolant. In other words, water at the correct level in the tank, still gives a coolant level warning.

But I assume you put proper coolant in anyway.

If that's the case the level sensor may be on its way out. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Its the float/level SG sensor in the reservoir I think?

OK did a test today. Reservoir topped up, floaty thing bobble in correct position.

Hit the motorway and reached a cruising speed (round figure with an 8 in it) @ 2750 rpm

After about 1 minute, BONG! - "Check Coolant Level"

Can cruise all day at 2500 rpm without fault.

(I'll let you do the calculations Smile ) .

Have you tried "overfilling" a bit and then testing again (where the fuzz is not too vigilant) ? It may be that driving with running engine pulls the level down a bit or that your floaty thing is getting "heavy" by leaking/soaking up coolant (over time). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Coolant has to be a certain strength or the warning light will come on

As Ebajema suggested in first post, I've also read that the coolant level sensor checks the SG (Specific Gravity) of the coolant. If you've been topping up regularly with water only or a weak mixture, this could be the issue.

I have the same problem. My level does drop slightly though but where it's going, I don't know. Never overheats either.

noddy, do you mean a maintained high rpm generates the coolant message ? .

Mine also does this. I had the fluid changed and had it exact fluid topped up correctly by garage ad it was annoying. . Garage said if it still does it it will be the float sensor that detects volume of water to coolant. I can get car to sit at about 76 ish mph and it will be fine all day as in hundreds if miles but if I keep it for a minute or 2 over that speed I get the bong. I keep my eye on the fluid level and it only wants the tiniest bit every 1000 miles or so, I then top it up 50/50 water/coolent but it wants a cup full if that. 2003 Range Rover HSE 3.0 TD6
