Yet another battery drain issue!?!? 2007 VSE

Hi All,
After a happy 3.5 years ownership and 55k miles I have a fault that worries me Sad
2007 VSE TDV8
New Alternator and battery in August
Recently battery dead after a couple of days of no use. In to Guava Guildford and some forum reading.. Tests show minimal drain over normal 450 vs 300 ma apparently ish? Anyway I said change the FSR (after so many forum comments) as its a common problem. Done... drove home, 24 hours later I get tell tale signs tonight like resetting fuel gauge.

So, what next? Sad
Thanks
Nick

My 2002 Td6 is doing the same (Just cycled into work as I had a flat battery this morning!! Sad )

In September I left it for two weeks, it started fine, then straight after I left it standing for two days, flat...
I've also changed the FSR and the battery (BOSCH) was replaced earlier this year.

It seems if I use it daily it's fine, 36-48 hours standing idle and it's flat Sad

I have similar troubles and have replaced battery.
What I do now is charge it overnight or for a night and a day at weekend, its no trouble for me as its on the drive and I can just connect the CTEK via the tow socket. Its a real PITA when it doesn't start particularly as SWMBO mounts her high horse about her reliable (and much cheaper) Nissan Juke Embarassed .

The reason I never really started looking for the elusive battery drain is that its not consistent, I've left it parked at airports for days and also at a lodge in Scotland for a week - no problem starting, but on the other hand Ive left it parked on the drive for a couple of days and it won't start, also in this weather the if I leave the FBH on for too long (20 mins or more) real risk of not starting.

Finally I'm not sure anyone has really cracked it (although some don't have the problem it seems), Batteries replaced, Alternators replaced, FSRs replaced, long hours with multimeters whilst pulling fuses.
So now I have a routine and all is well - I'd still be interested and delighted to implement a definite fix for this problem if anyone finds one of course, but I'm beginning to think it is a Range Rover "undocumented feature" Very Happy Geoff

Mine also is inconsistent and now carry a set of jump leads all the time.

I've just got a CTEK charger and adaptor to plug in the ancilleries tow socket, only to find my socket is dead! (Another job to do / resolve)
Going to routinely put it on charge overnight, especially on the cold winter months.

Jeeessss you lot need to make an orderly queue at my door... Plugging chargers in constantly, not using FBH etc etc that's not what FF ownership is all about!

Hi,

I had some inconsistent starting. I've just fitted a new battery and hope i've fixed it. I'm a bit worried now. I'm using the car daily so it's been ok. Is there a chance I still have a problem waiting to pop up at a bad time.
I have a solar charger that I haven't used since putting the battery in. I might start using it again.

Last week I had to get a jump from an old Volvo 440, not good in the work carpark Laughing

C-T-C if we queue, what do you have to fix this

Cheers

Geoff

@Supershuttle I am exactly the same and am fed up.

C_T_C I would gladly let you try and sort it,i would even bring a pocket load of cash to the party, just to have a reliable Range is all i dream about.

A, just off tobuy a gallon of Petrol and a box of matches. That will certainly cure it. Thumbs Up

Cheers Piers

not had it particularly bad with mine.

Granted if you use the FBH it will put some drain on the battery, but it should not be sufficient to stop it starting, and the alternator/generator will charge the battery up pretty quickly.

One problem in this weather seems to be short trips as the heater will keep running after the car is switched off. can't say it has stopped mine though, Did have a problem with a duff battery, but since swapping it out to an S5 albeit a 100ah one not the 110ah, i haven't had any issues. And the car sits on the drive most of the week as i use the disco for work. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi Nick and not sure what you mean by 450 vs 300 ma.

If you have a constant 450 ma draw, that’s around 10 amps a day and is way way too high.

Also folks, just charging your battery once every now and again is not going to fix low battery problems.

Doing a single charge will only recharge the amount of battery capacity available, but does not recondition the battery, especially one that might be down on capacity because of high use but short drives.

To both recharge a battery and to try to recondition a poorly maintained battery, you need to do a 10 hour charge 3 or 4 times a week for about a month, if you what to get your battery into a fully charged state with as much as possible, of the original capacity of a new battery.

Note, this applies to new batteries as well.

Lead acid batteries do not reach their full capacity until they have been fully recharged after every use for around the first 20 to 30 charge cycles.

So if you are using your FBH and not driving long enough, at least 30 minutes each time you start your motor after using the FBH, you are setting yourselves up to stuffing your new battery right from the start. 2007 TDV8 Lux
