I had a problem like this on a 5 series, turned out to be a failing relay and the rolling codes between the some ECU's got out of sync.

Possible, did they throw up error codes? |

It did but I was just using a cheap ELM327 OBD 2 fault code reader, it threw up some codes and I changed some sensors but it made no difference, I eventually had to bite the bullet and had it recovered to an inde who couldn't figure it out, had it brought back to my house and an ex BMW mechanic with a laptop I was put in contact with came to take a look, 10 mins later it was running, changed the offending relay and no problems after that. |
