Water pump advice

Good afternoon fellow FullFat owners.

Well, it looks like my alternator is goosed, so I am in a dilemma. This is where I hope you guys can offer some advice.

1) Do I remove duff alternator and get it refurbished or just buy brand new off the bay?.

2) I intend doing the job myself and as I know it is a hefty job, should I change the water pump at the same time?.

3) would it be wise to put a new alternator belt on?.

4) Anything else to consider changing?.

I would suggest to following :

If you have a good rebuilder or are handy yourself, it may be worth to refurbish the alternator yourself. You should however do a thorough check on what exactly is wrong. Also look at the price difference between getting the parts (bearings/brushes etc.) and a refurbished or new alternator. Sometimes you get lucky and find a cheap new one on the bay (KP found the complete fuel pump systems for an SC for 50 GBP for me, much better than the usual 400 GBP).

When you are at it, definitely do the water pump as I believe they are a weak point on the BMW V8 (please correct me if I'm wrong here).

Belt replacement definitely, unless the current one is only a few days/weeks old.

Tension roller and tensioner itself is one I usually do when I do the belt (assuming the belt has done a fair bit of hours with the roller etc.) The bearing on the roller is not a superstrong point and they tend to fail sometimes. The money isn't worth the risk to me. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Would you happen to know what the belt tensioner looks like?. Is it single or double wheel?. "I got him boxed in like a turtle's pecker!".

Yep, I have downloaded the manual for the 2002 to 2005 model. Just do a search on the internet : workshop manual range rover pdf.

Have a look in the Wiki first and you have a lot of info with pics and drawings Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Deffo do the water pump. Ebajema, u were right, they are a known fault. It can be quite difficult to get the big nut off the fan so make sure you have the right sized tool and don't shear anything trying too hard to get it off. Can take around an hour I am told!
