[Wanted] Good (must be good!) LT95 Gearbox

I have a long tale of woe which I'll happily share with you but I'm in need of a GOOD LT95 gearbox for my Defender. Preferably one from an RRC with the higher output drive ratios but all possibles considered.

Quite a lot of differences I think, and as the Defender has already been hacked to fit the 95 and all the controls, it's going to be easiest to replace like-for-like. It's enough aggro just changing the box (and massively unrewarding when the new box you fit is ten times worse than the one you took out!) so I'm trying to minimise the pain!

I have partly pulled the original box apart this evening, tempted to replace a bearing or two and see if that helps, but beyond replacing the main input bearing, its a complete strip of all the gears, synchros, selectors, etc etc to get to the rest, and I'm feeling distinctly girly about tackling that!! Laughing

IS getting it rebilt not economical or getting the parts and DIYing it at all? Surely it cant be that bad as long as you have a nice big work bench and its all clean? FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

From what I can find, Will, rebuild opportunities are few and far between, and also of questionable quality (eg a steam-cleaned box = a fully-overhauled unit!). In addition, if you fit genuine parts, they're REALLY expensive (eg £100+ for the input shaft bearing alone, although you can get aftermarket ones for £20-ish).

Then, in order to service the gearbox (by which I mean the 4-speed gear unit itself) you have to start at the back, completely dismantle the innards of the transfer box, along with the rear output (and possibly the centre diff, not sure about that bit yet) before you can get to the back of the mainshaft to remove that.....and that's before you need 7 hands and 56 fingers to get all the synchros etc apart and back in!

So you can see why I'm erring towards a decent replacement box! My main alternative at present is just to replace the input shaft bearing and see whether that helps. I would do the layshaft bearings too (known for failing) but whilst it's easy enough to replace them, you then have to set the preload, and to do that you need the mainshaft out - see above!!

Ultimately it's do-able, sure, but it feels like more than I want to get into right now. Replacement boxes seem to go for £50-£100, I guess because they don't often fail, so I just need to find one and to be sure it's working OK.

Other possibility, well there's one on eBay at the moment for £4.99 with knackered layshaft bearings, I could buy that and use it as a learning tool, probably get more for it as scrap if it all goes pear-shaped and I just weigh it in!

If I went that route Brian, off the top of my head I would need:

- correct adaptor ring for the V8
- replacement clutch?? (I put a new one in when I put this knackered box in)
- different propshafts?
- change the floor for gearstick/transfer selector location

Are they 5-speed? I have a Fairey OD on this unit which gives me low-revs cruising.

An R380 is by far the nicest 'box out there, but that'll mean transmission tunnel changes and bellhousing changes. Not sure if there's an adaptor to fit the R380 in place of the LT95, but it may be worth looking on Ashcroft's site. But then you could always end up with a pup of an R380 as well...

R380's are 5-speed and you won't need an O/D but the 1.2 input gear on your t-box from a Discovery is a worthwhile move. My 110's got that and cruises at 80+mph.

The alternative is to take yours out and get it refurbed by a reputable man who knows what he's doing. See if there's a good gearbox specialist near you and go from there. It avoids buying a dog and also saves you a lot of time. Si. <This is my name.

Try and give Ashcroft a ring and see if they have any instock. If not then maybe ask them if they would refurbish one of your box's and how much and if they would be interested in buying your other one as im guessing you swapped it out you kept the old box as well?

Some places will do that for a reduced rate on the rebuild, but i wouldn't mention it until you have a price for a refurb box or to get yours refurb'd so you can haggle the price down a little more as their website makes no mention of the LT95 box, just the other main contenders... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Ashcroft can make you a r380 with a short bellhousing so the gearbox sits in a better place. Lots of the racers have this set up
