Oil Filter Housing

Does the whole dome top of the oil filter housing unscrew when using the 36mm socket or is it just what appears to be the first 1/4" of a spindle top? I cant get to grips yet with posting photos so I cant show you what I mean.

I have tried without success to unscrew the dome top of the filter housing, even after running the engine for a while to warm up the oil and filter housing. Whats the nack?
Ta, Chris

Having never done it myself on this car, I can only assume its like every other one I've done.

Normally it's the entire black plastic top using the 36mm spanner. Normally very tight Crying or Very sad
Look on the wiki for oil filter, it might be on there. Or search the forum I've seen pictures on here somewhere. Bushy

Thanks chaps, still cant get it off. The top 1/4" popped off but the whole of the domed top remained in situ. If I have to use excessive force will it shear anything important?

I've posted this to pick up tips from those who have tried it recently, tips that may not be in the wiki or a search.

To confound it all the bonnet release cable has just broken at the handle end! I can open the bonnet using pliers to pull the cable. I'll be ordering a new cable tomorrow.

I f%&$*£g hate it when something simple as unscrewing a filter housing becomes such a difficulty Censored

What engine is it?

If its the TDV8 then the whole plastic dome comes off - it shouldnt be too tight - only about 25Nm.

The black plastic bit as per below screws off.
If its tight it probably because there is no oil in you engine. Very Happy
