Nice ride out from Dalmuir to Rowardennan today with a few mates, then when I returned home I decided 63 miles was not enough so I got the single speed out and went up to Eaglesham, Newton Mearns, Barrhead Dams and home, a total of 82 miles

The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond from Rowardennan

Did you fall down a well at the end?
Your elevation gained, minus that lost, leaves you 32ft lower than when you started Laughing

Not so good news...

Had a dental appointment on Tuesday, I was sitting in the chair having my tooth drilled when I started feeling rather warm, (I have been known to faint in the dentist before but it hasn't happened for about twenty years but I am always on the lookout for the symptoms) so I say to the dentist I'm feeling rather warm, he stops and I start feeling better, back to drilling and I start feeling hot again, so he stops and again I cool off. Then I remember taking my specs off and handing them to his assistant. Next thing I remember is coming round screaming as loud as I can with a pain between my shoulder blades, like someone was stabbing me and twisting the blade...real agonising intense pain. I had to get up from lying down but couldn't move I was stuck, slowly and carefully I eventually I managed to get into a position that my head was between my legs and I was supporting my head with my hands. I couldn't let my head go as the pain was too much.

The dentist called the ambulance and the quick response team arrived on bikes and started doing checks, I still couldn't move I was stuck in the one position, the Q.R. guys checked my blood pressure which was very low and pulse which was also very low and when the ambulance arrived they decided to give me gas to ease the pain, only I couldn't breath in deep enough for the gas to work. Because my pulse and BP were so low there was concerns as to giving me a morphine injection and after a bit of deliberating decided that they would go ahead and jab me, this was enough to allow me out of the dentist chair and into the ambulance. Once in the ambulance the paramedic spent ages wiring me up to various machines and gave me an ECG and there was something showing that he thought might be caused by a heart problem. He then sent the results to Hairmyres and The Golden Jubilee heart hospitals and awaited confirmation of where I had to be taken. I was whisked off to Hairmyres and when I arrived I was taken into the emergency CCU where they started removing my clothes and sticking wires all over me, I was given a 2 x Coronary Angiographys, 2 x MRI scans, they took numerous blood samples asked a million questions. I was put into a separate ward room and more tests, then a CT scan another ECG and more blood tests...All came back negative which was good news.

Wednesday morning I was given an Xray as they suspected a clot at my lungs was the cause of the back pain but the results came back clear. The doctor then decided it was safe for me to leave and I was given some Co-Codamol and sent packing still in agony. Thursday morning Liz phoned my GP and he came to the house and after an examination said that quite often what happens with low heart rate and blood pressure is that fainting can cause muscles to go into spasm, seems thats what has happened to me and I am now on Dihydrocodeine and Diazepam to give me some pain relief.

I suppose the good news is that my arteries are clear, no furring no clots nothing after all the years of smoking also my heart is healthy and strong. I do wonder what the results would have been a year earlier if I had still been smoking

Enough ranting and rambling from me, I'm doped up with these drugs right now but just thought I would let you know what's been happening...won't be doing any cycling for a few days, possibly weeks

Well it's been a tough old week for me, I was in so much pain last Friday I had the doctor pay me a home visit, he decided that Diazepam and Dihydrocodeine would be best for my injury. Unfortunately I had to stop taking them as they were making me do all sort of silly things, how some people can become addicted to these drugs and function (even to a reasonable level) is beyond me. On Wednesday I received a letter from the doctor saying my release papers had arrived from the hospital and could I make an appointment to speak with him. Shocked

Today I went to the surgery where I was to hear the news that I already knew but didn't wish to hear, I have a broken bone in my back, it will heal but may leave me with a certain amount of pain, but it could heal and never bother me again, I will have to wait and see.
I now have to undergo lots of tests done to try and find the cause of the fracture, first a series of blood tests where they will be testing for various faults/problems mainly Osteoporosis, Thyroid problems and about another half dozen things but at this moment I can't remember what else he said. After the blood tests I have to have bone scans to check the density of my bones which could take up to 3 months to sort out, so the future's not so bright right now

Before leaving I was prescribed Tramadol as an alternative to the Diazepam, but from what I've read they are no better and sometimes worse so I think I'll be keeping them for when the pain is too much.

I'm really ticked off, I've worked so hard all through the winter to get my fitness levels up so that I can do a cycle sportive which takes place on 1st June and now I have to cancel and miss it out. The route starts at Pitlochry and goes over Glenshee, The Lecht and finishes in the Cairngorms, a total of 102 miles and almost 9000 feet of elevation. This was to be my 'icing on the cake' for all my hard graft and now I'll be sitting at home watching the rain falling from the sky as my cycling partner goes it alone...

Gutted doesn't describe how I feel right now, SWMBO almost saw me cry today as the doctor read out the paperwork...I think a stiff drink might help just a tad but the thought of waking up with a hangover doesn't sound like much fun so a bar of chocolate and to hang with the healthy eating plan for a few days

I'm Back Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

It's now been 5½ weeks since I fractured my T4 and today I managed to get out on my bike for my first ride since then. I'm not pain free and I'm still taking the occasional pain killer but I really needed to get out and try before I end up in the loony bin.

So the dilemma was how can I ride on drops with a broken back and after some research I found that those clever French manufacturers made a rather comfortable sportive bike which has a shorter top tube and extended head tube to give a more upright position. So the hunt was on and one came up for sale a few miles from me.
