Gearbox slow to find a gear on roundabout entry

The car is an early 2007 MY 4.2SC just clocked around 65k miles. All was apparantly fine until a trip to the UK roundabout capital MK this weekend. Any roundabout approached at slow speed but where I could keep rolling resulted in the car appearing to go into neutral so when I tried to accelerate it just rev'd (no drive). I then had to ease off and wait a second or two and then it would eventually select a gear and I could get away. Was actually quite dangerous a couple of times and meant I had to either stop before entering the roundabout, or approach at relatively high speed and hope I found a gap.

Have tried a few searches on here and am aware of the advice to change/flush the gearbox oil. But I've not found anyone describing precisely this symptom. Anyone have any idea what's happening and why? Cheers

...also I had a g/box failure on my '02 at 78k and it had the well documented: burnt oil through overheating due to blocked rad and the symptom was going into limp home mode a few times...before eventual complete failure on a hill in Brum. Does the 07 S/C have the same box....and does it suffer the same cooling system issues shortening its life? Cheers again! Mike - MPx

Have you had the ATF fluid level checked?

This sounds very similar to mine when it started to fail. Sorry not tech enough to know if you have the same gearbox as me, or whether it could be a different matter.

Slipped out of gear as I slowed down but needed to be either stationary or coasting for a moment for it to get back out of neutral. Also didnt show any gear selected on the dash.

I'll have a search and try to post the link to the topic...

Good luck

Common issue , known and reported for SC 's ; you need to ask your dealer to update software for gearbox . !!!!!

I had similar shunting issues that were intermittent and got solved with a gearbox software update and a reset of the adaptions.

Magic, I like the idea of a s/w update to fix it! Surprised though that s/w wouldn't work at 65k whereas it did at 60k - but definitely one to get checked/done. Will also get the ATF flushed/changed and levels checked. Interesting cross post on the linkage issue (which sounds like exactly the same symptoms as I've got) but that's TDV8 not 4.2SC unless they use the same bits - but worth checking out when its on the ramp.

Anyone know if the blocked lower core in the rad issue was caried through to the Jag era from the BMs? Mike - MPx

The linkage is worth doing first - you can do it off the ramp in off road height. I had the same issue in a MY07 4.4 petrol so not just the TDV8. you should immediately notice the stick is a lot crisper when selecting gear.

If this is the linkage in question....then it has now been soaked in WD40 at both ends of the cranked link on the right and on the ram shaft. Didn't feel any difference in the stick. Went for a run to our nearest roundabout (4 miles) and of course it was fine, but then it probbaly would have been anyway as it didn't start going wrong at the weekend until about half an hour into each of the journeys. But here's hoping....many thanks! Very Happy

BUT....

I'm impressed that you can do that! I'm no Japanese racing snake, but I didn't think excessively portly, and I had to really push to get under the car even in the highest position and the sidestep was crushing my ribs! Next time, I'll pop it on the ramp!

To be honest I couldn't feel any difference in the linkage stiffness whatsoever.

Hope it works.

I dont have sidesteps, but it was no probs for me to get under. Maybe that time at the gym is finally paying off!

when mine started going, the selector definitely felt spongey - after some wd40 and working the selector for a while, greased it up and the shifter felt smoother and I could feel it click into drive much more crisply.

Have finally had an excuse for some more longer runs - down to Cornwall at the weekend and over to Exeter today. Gear change was faultless throughout so it certainly seems that working the linkage has helped. Will still get the ATF changed and checked at next service though due in a couple of weeks. Is it likely that my specialist LR Indie will be able to update the gearbox software or is that official dealer only stuff? Mike - MPx

Bit of a thread resurrection, but thought it might be interesting to report that despite the corrections applied last year (gearbox software update, ATF checked OK, linkages cleaned/greased/oiled), the same issue came back last weekend. This time it was slightly worse as, when the car lost drive, it didn't come back. I managed to work out that I still had drive in reverse, and in Sport/Manual mode - which was handy as it avoided waiting for the RAC! I also noticed that if I moved the lever through the selections P,R,N,D then D would show on the dash for a bit but would soon disappear along with the drive to the wheels.

Anyway today I just stuck the car on the ramp and then cleaned/greased the selector rod, and took off, WD40'd, and replaced the two cable connectors by the linkage. Although it had failed again while manoeuvring from the linhay to the barn, once I'd finished I went for a test drive and all seems to be working again. Happy days !

Another oddity was that when it failed I got a "Bing" and the message "Transmission fault". When I checked for faults with the IID tool I got a "no fault recorded" for the transmission Mike - MPx
