Should I be worried by these warnings?

Slowly driving along the M77 due to congestion, I get loads of warnings on the dash -

1. HDC disabled
2. Transmission fault, stop safely.

Loads of yellow lights on the dash!

Pulled onto the hard shoulder and switched off and restarted - no errors!

Plugged in the IIDTool and found the followings errors stored :-

Rear diff
- 186D clutch actuator stuck

ATCM Terrain Response -
- C401 invalid data received from engine control module/ powertrain control module
- C402 invalid data received from terrain transmission control module
- C403 invalid data received from transfer case control module
- C146 invalid data received from vehicle dynamics control module

So, it seems to implicate 4 separate module, which is rather unlikely? I wonder if the "stuck clutch actuator" created all the errors?

Looking back at the cars history, I see that the car was investigated a year ago for a rear diff actuator fault which was cleared. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Check and clean the earths just to be sure. Does sound battery related so if it's not the battery could be a poor earth? If not then you're in to deeper realms. 2012 5.0L S/C

Hello Everyone

I might be able to help you diagnose this issue.

Plugged in the IIDTool and found the followings errors stored :-

Rear diff
- 186D clutch actuator stuck :

This is not related to your dashboard lighting up like a Christmas tree. Did you try to clear it to see if it would come back?

ATCM Terrain Response -
- C401 invalid data received from engine control module/ powertrain control module
- C402 invalid data received from terrain transmission control module
- C403 invalid data received from transfer case control module
- C146 invalid data received from vehicle dynamics control module

While developing the EASControl, IIDTool and others, we accidently made these faults codes appear more than I can count on my hands. The dashboard also lighted up like yours. The issue is related to the CAN network. It consists of a twisted pair of wires that connect ECU’s together and data is transferred through.

There are 2 CAN network on your Range Rover. The terrain response ECU is connected on the high speed CAN. The wires are Yellow/Black and Yellow/Brown.

On normal operation, these errors may occur from time to time but they will not cause your dashboard to light up. In your case, I would place my chips on a hardware problem. If there is a short to ground of a CAN wire(s) for example, this will happen. It would also explain why the problem is intermitent since the wires move and the short wont always be present.

When investigating another issue, we found wires under the driver’s seat that were rubbing on a metal plate and shorted to ground via this plate. The medium speed CAN twisted pair had also started to wear. It wasn’t enough to short but, if I were you, I would start my investigation there even though our high speed can twisted pair was ok. We also found the same issue under the passenger seat but for other wires (speakers).

I hope this helps

hi there

I drive a LR3 V8 SE and had the same problems: stuck clutch actuator.

Alanm_3, could I ask you what remedial action you took? Did you have a look at the wiring or did you change the actuator.

All I did was pull over and stop. Switched the car off and back on, and the problem disappered!

Haven't seen it since............... Whistle Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Hi Alanm_3

thanks for the info. If you will excume me, I have one last question (I hope).

The machanic I took my LR, informed me that I need to change the actuator and have the diff motor calibrated. My question, are you now driving with the actuator in the stuck position? what does it do then, this clutch actuator?

I have no idea what is does, sorry!

I would assume that if it was genuinely stuck that I would get some warnings?

Sorry I can't help beyond that.......... Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
